West Wingers: should I watch Seasons 5-7? So, like, I love Aaron Sorkin so much I should marry him. I watch Sports Night more than I should and [More:] I have just completed Season 4 of The West Wing on DVD. I've found it hugely entertaining. However, I know Sorkin departed the show after this season and it seems that many people feel the quality of the show declined greatly after that--although the loudest of these people seem to be the die-hardiest of the die-hard Sorkin freaks. So for those of you who've followed the show from first to last, is it worth it? Keep in mind I'm buying the boxed sets, not Netflixing or torrenting or anything.
It was hit and miss, but I thought it started being hit and miss in Season 4. There were a couple of storylines that I HATED in 6 and 7 and overall I thought this entire final season was only so-so. But you probably need to bite the bullet and watch it so you will not wonder about it.

I thought season 7 was far better than season 6 - but nowhere near some of the writing in the first few seasons. (I really like Alan Alda, Kristen Chenowith, and Jimmy Smits, though.)

Watuc, I loved Sports Night, and the Sorkin West Wing. I was hooked by the time he left, and I liked it, but I really missed his writing. The casting remained excellent, though. The Penn & Teller episode was really good.

Yes.

I loved the last couple of seasons.
Although it confused me deeply at times.

I stopped at Season 6.

It just got to be too hard to watch. I didn't want to see Bartlett in his decline. And so, the episodes from last season just kept stacking atop one another on the DVR. We'd see them listed there, sigh, then watch something else.

Also, the death of John Spencer made the show all the more of wistful affair.

That being said, I caught one of the season 7 episodes this weekend on Bravo. In this one, the Santos campaign is in full swing and Janeane Garafalo starts her guesting stint. And you know, it was really good -- apart from the horrible dye job on Allison Janey. The spark and pop of the dialogue was back. And Smits looked incredibly Presidential.

So maybe we were wrong to step away. And maybe NBC was wrong to end the show.

But keep your eyes on the Fall. I've seen the first episode of Sorkin's "Studio 60" and it is simply amazing.

September 18th, grabbingsand! I'm excited.

I've watched about 8 eps of the 5th season (through the shutdown of the government and maybe one beyond) and the tone's definitely different. Everyone's so ANGRY at everyone else. But I'm still hooked so I guess I'll manage without Sorkin. Plus, I do love me some Jimmy Smits so I'll hang in there.
