Ohmygodohmygodohmygod. I just spent NINE HOURS without power (i.e., without the Internet). What'd I miss???
Well, taz, a few houses down, a branch fell onto the high-tension lines. And it stuck there. And then the branch caught fire.
And while the fire trucks were here the whole time, somehow it took the electric company 2 hours to show up.... And many more to replace the line (which had burned itself in half).
But anyway. It was a lesson in slowing down, and i actually saw some interesting things today while my power was out.
One time V. and I were sitting out on our balcony and the wind was just incredible. Across the street from us was flat that had the awning down over the balcony, and it was this old fashioned roll-down awning made of light metal slats. Well, the people were evidently out of town, and the wind kept gusting under the awning and pulling it loose with these huge screeching noises... It was obvious that it was only a matter of time before the whole thing went flying.
This was incredibly dangerous because those metal slats, when ripped off that way, are razor sharp, and we were really worried about pedestrians down in the street. V. went over to the building, but couldn't find anyone with access... Actually, he couldn't find anyone, period. So we were trying to decide whether to call the fire department, or maybe the police, but also realizing that it was going to be too late... when SKREEEEEEEEEEEEE, the ripped part was utterly yanked loose and went flying... down to the street, just as we feared.
But, instead of beheading someone, it slashed the power lines, made a big explosion, and finally landed in the street. That was quite a dramatic 45 minutes. The whole thing was terribly eerie, because it was August, really, really hot, with this weird phenomenal wind... And the city was just pretty much deserted. Almost nobody around, which is fairly typical for August when anyone who can escapes to the sea or the mountains. We sat there for a few more hours as afternoon faded into evening (nothing else to do - no electricity!) watching the whole saga of the police coming, the street being blocked off, the electric company arriving, all amid the debris of tree limbs and assorted items that this gale-force wind was tossing around. It was very dreamlike.
I spent the whole last nine hours showing my electric bill to people, saying "Now how about that!" and smacking it a few times with the back of my hand.
actually, I don't have an electric bill. nevermind.
I crashlanded in a flying RV driven by my brother, did battle with a Mexican gang in the desert over a spent bike tire tube, and hung out with blue-faced art teachers who had the hots for me.
