Las Vegas Update about Me [More:]I've made all my reservations. My best friend is coming—I've mentioned him hereabouts often. His name is Darien. We're staying at the Barbary, which is where essexjan and jonmc and pips are staying. I'm renting a car—I mention it in case anyone else needs help getting around. Darien's expressed interest in seeing Cirque Du Soleil's "O" at the Bellagio. Anyone else? I'll be there Thursday afternoon through Monday morning.

I'm really excited! I hope you bunnies on the fence will fall over to the side of fun!
Whopeeeeeeeeee. I'm adding you to the Wiki!

Dammit. Vegas keeps getting better. Especially with the knowledge of how very awesome mega-meetups are. Grr.

Yay!

You know, I know I don't post much (I'm trying to be better) but I do read Mecha every day and I'm really looking forward to meeting every single bunny that can make it.

What does everyone want to do?

I'm going to try and free up as much of my schedule that weekend as I can (I'm hoping to have a gig to invite you to).

As a local, krix, you'll have to suggest a place we could have an open Metafilter meetup on Friday or Saturday night. Somewhere near enough to the strip for those of us without cars.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 August | 14:35
As for me, I want to:

go indoor skydiving
lounge around the pool at the MGM (I think they check for room cards for entrance, but I bet I could sneak some of you in with us and pretend you're in our room)
eat at buffets
watch weddings at an Elvis chapel (is that allowed?)
gamble on penny or nickel slots
play low low low stakes blackjack
go to a dance club
wear sequins
be fabulous

Seems like there are lots of places that would work for meetups right inside the hotels/casinos... bars, restaurants, lounges... the possibilities are endless... Whoopeeeeee!

(on preview: pink, you are ALWAYS fabulous! : )

Aw, darnit! I want to go.

Well, are you coming, halonine? Or no?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 August | 14:51
TPS, (on preview:like Pips says) I was thinking of maybe one of the hotel lounges - the cheesier the Top-40 band, the better. There's drinks, dancing, and people can come and go (unlike a restaurant or something). Perhaps I could do some recon before the meetup, it's been a while since I've been on the strip on a weekend.

I'm not sure if you can actually watch the weddings...hmmm, there's other oppotunities for Elvisness though, I'm sure.

For anyone that wants a splurge, the Paris buffet for Sunday brunch is superb, but it costs around $25 and there is a long wait.
posted by krix 09 August | 14:58
Cool, I'm down with wherever, I just want to go to a place the locals will want to come to. If a tourist came to NYC and said, let's meet up in Times Square!!!, the locals might have a fit.

I'm searching for lounge info and found this of interest to those staying at the Barbary Coast:

For true lounge lizards, a night isn't complete without a visit to Drai's. This chic subterranean spot in the basement of the Barbary Coast Hotel is a steakhouse by day and an after-hours club by night. It opens at 2 a.m. and doesn't get going until about 4, and it's a place to see the late-night Las Vegas underbelly. It's wild yet possesses a veneer of cool sophistication — like a visit to David Lynch's living room.
posted by krix 09 August | 15:20
Ooh, that sounds really cool, krix. Looks like maybe it was good I choose the Barbary. But I mostly chose it because of a nucleus of bunnies.

Too bad there's no way (or is there?) to manage to have our rooms close to each other?
posted by kmellis 09 August | 15:25
ooooooooooo...a suggestion:
flair bartending at Carnaval Court Bar & Grill@Harrahs.

I just called this place and they have live music from noonish to 5:30p and then from 8:30p to 1:30a - On Thu-Sat there is a (gender-biased [m$7/f$3])cover charge that starts at 9:00p. Maybe a meetup time of 7:00p would get us around that and give enough time before the band for chattery, but still fun and dancing once everyone is tipsy.

kmellis, it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. Just mention that you're meeting other hotel guests as part of a group and see what they can do. You might even mention that you booked there because of the group. Get with ej and jon and pips and get a good "cover story" (long lost adopted siblings! never met before! next on Maury!) . I would think with enough notice and if they aren't full they could at least put you all on the same floor. Check-in dates and choosing of smoking/non-smoking rooms might effect it, though.
posted by krix 09 August | 15:46
Awesome, krix, sounds very cool! I say, yes!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 August | 15:49
It might actually be worth asking if they could arrange a group discount, if everyone's staying there.
posted by occhiblu 09 August | 16:01
Oh, and as a local, it's not too bad to hit the strip and downtown once or twice a year to meet/entertain folks. We generally know all the back routes to the parking garage and stuff. Once the initial "omg! they make these tourists visitors pay how much for a Heineken?" wears off (and we remind ourselves that we have NO STATE INCOME TAX to pay thanks to you lovely, lovely visitors), the worst part is after a night of debauchery we can't just stumble up to the room.
posted by krix 09 August | 16:02
I think to get a group discount, we would've had to arrange that before people reserved/paid for rooms.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 August | 16:04
That's right- people can smoke in bars/clubs in LV, right?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 August | 16:13
Yep, it's practically mandatory*. You can also walk down the street**, right past a cop, with a drink*** in your hand.
*not really
**by 'street' I mean 'The Strip'
***easiest when it's a giant frozen margarita in a clear plastic Eiffel Tower for some reason

The Shadow Bar at Caesar's looks way cool, too.

(if only the dancers wore bunny ears and tails : )

The best part of Vegas is lying around having lots of sex. Seriously. Maybe it's the cheap hotel rooms calling out to be defiled. Maybe it's the fact that all day long you're basically within 10 minutes of said hotel room doing nothing but eating, drinking, smoking, and pursuing sensual pleasures. Maybe it's the heat. Or the general sordidness of the city. But whatever it is, there's a magical sexual energy about that city. I highly recommend bringing someone you want to screw in order to fully enjoy the city properly.

I once walked up and ashed on a cop's shoe in Vegas. He was standing on a persian carpet inside a posh hotel lobby. He said "thank you very much, sir."
posted by scarabic 09 August | 16:37
(Does this mean you're coming, scarabic?!??!?!)
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 August | 16:38
I also just noticed The Seahorse Lounge and PURE Nightclub, both also at Caesar's.

(on preview: good advice, scarabic; last time I was there, it was with two girlfriends... not the same, alas... still fun, though... and there is, of course, the potential for hook-ups, bunny or otherwise, for those single folks...)

I don't do tipsy. I do either blackout-oblivion-mayhem or no-thanks-diet-coke-for-me-please-then-everyone-else-can-enjoy-the-evening.

Oh, the flair bar. I was telling Pinky about it Monday night. It's an experience to be had.

Last time I was in Vegas... well, I spent about $1K total that weekend, including airfare, cab fare, dinners, brunches, birthday presents, cover charges, drinks, etc. I also went all by myself, since it was my birthday weekend and ended up staying at the northern end of the strip at the Riviera. Never again, as my favorite casinos are south on the Strip (Bellagio, Paris, Aladdin, Venice, Treasure Island, Mandalay Bay).

I even had a Vegas dream recently, because I want to go so bad.

Damn your eyes!

All other considerations, like work, the timing on burning man, a friend's wedding right around the same time, and the fact that I just went to Vegas, are steering me toward not going.

However I am not sure I want to go on living life if I miss this party. I'm going to see if I can scrounge up one of my boyfriends for a breakneck roadtrip out there. My GF was pleasantly surprised by our recent trip there. I don't think she expected to enjoy it as much as she did. But that said, I highly doubt she's up for going again so soon.

If and when I become "definitely" the wiki will be the first to know :)

Or the general sordidness of the city.

I stayed at the Rio once and found a stain on my bedsheet. I got half the bill comped.

Vegas Rule #1: Check your sheets in case you can get a comp.

I was in Vegas in May. I don't remember over half of the weekend, except that I enjoyed myself. That's how good it is.
