My Tomatoes are Coming In! Now if only I can keep my two year old from pulling them off before they're really ready!
The cherry toms are coming in first but the zebra striped are looking beautiful as well. I'll post a photo of them later when they've taken on some more color.
Tomato fact: Once they're full-grown, they don't actually need to ripen on the vine. Pick them once they have a bit of a blush, and they'll ripen just fine even in a paper bag. "Vine ripened" is a marketing term. So long as tomtatoes ripen naturally (i.e., they're not gassed), it doesn't matter where they ripen.
So, fenriq, pick 'em before the kidlet can, keep them in a high place, and you'll be fine.
[On preview: If you really like store-bought tomatoes, most of my preaching will be lost on you. :) ]
I love tomatoes but really love the fresh ones, the ones we get in the stores are decent but can't hold a candle to the fresh. And I never, ever store them in the fridge (thanks Alton Brown!).
I'm very much looking forward to harvesting a handful, adding some fresh basil and even making our own mozzerella.
Fenriq, when you find fresh mozzerella curd, let me know where. I finally found it at Berkeley Bowl, but the instructions I found for making the cheese totally sucked.
And the mozz curd actually cost more than an equivalent amount of fresh mozzerella. Go figure.
It's been too hot for my tomatoes. I did get cherry tomatoes, but the regular ones, though flowering, have not developed. Same thing with zucchini. Lots of flowers, no fruit. A horticulturist said it's due to the fact that the heat keeps the bees from pollinating, so I'm supposed to go "shake" the flowers so they'll pollinate properly. But the cucumbers are growing like crazy!!
