Sass, I've got the opposite problem, as since November I've been growing out what my x used to call the 'Angry Lesbian' haircut (think Annie Lennox, complete with platinum bleach job).

Things to consider as well as how straight/curly your hair is, is the thickness (how MUCH hair you have), the growth pattern (does it lay down as sleek as Ziyi Zhang's or stick up like Alfalfa's from Li'l Rascals?) as well as the texture (how fine or wiry your individual hair shafts are). All of these factors are going to make a significant impact on any styles you choose, so your best option is to pick a few different styles in the length you like, and (hopefully) your stylist will be competent to work with your unique head of hair to recreate the look as closely as possible... or even better point you in the direction of a look that will work.

The reason I say this is because I've struggled for decades with my own thick, coarse, cowlick-infested messy mop of hair. Those of you who pine for thick hair? Rest assured, there is such a thing as overkill. I can barely even get it into a ponytail because my hairline comes all the way down to my shoulders in back and no, I don't have a short neck. I was very fortunate to find a stylist in Boulder who has the same sort of unruly mane as I do, so she's awesome at finding clever ways to cut it attractively.

IMO, that Ashlee Simpson 'do is only going to look good on someone who has fine, baby thin hair. On someone with hair like mine... well you'd be lucky not to look like Cousin It most of the time, unless you are willing to wage a styling product jihad every morning.
