Fidel Castro steps down. In Little Havana, people took to the streets, banging pots, waving Cuban flags from cars, and dancing in joy. Cries of "Viva Cuba" rang down Calle Ocho, the virtual epicenter of Cuban exile.
Well this should be interesting to watch. A friend of mine wanted to go to Cuba before Castro died, and it seems he's too late. Here's hoping it doesn't go down the shithole.
It is nice to see that he's dying of old age, and all those attempts made on his life by the US gov't failed utterly. heh.

I just watched a really good "The Nature of Things" that talked about sustainable farming in Cuba and how environmentally sound it was. It was really good (David Suzuki stuff is if you can get past the preachiness) but ended with the disclaimer that Cuba is still a police state and not the ecological uptopia it was portrayed as.

Oh, temporarily. However, at his age his return to power will be relatively short-term. It'll be interesting to see what happens next.

I certainly don't like the man's politics, but damn, at some level it's just so satisfying that he's thumbed his nose at the U.S. for so long and gotten away with it.

On behalf of all my hermanos back in Miami, I do not wish him well.

I tend to agree on some level. I dunno why, maybe it's his tenacity, but there seems to be something about Fidel that seems admirable.

Please let me state again, I am not well-informed on this, so perhaps I should keep my yip shut. Off to the wiki to learn more about Cuba...

I won't be sad to see Castro go, but I sure will be sad to see yet another American puppet dictatorship set up south of the border. Hopefully the Cubans can dodge that bullet and pull off a Central European reform-style migration to the type of government and economic system they desire without the US and the exiles and the IMF mucking things about, or other governments propping up the current one.

Ditto.

But I think they're celebrating too soon. I read (somewhere) that his brother (who's poised to take his place) is more of a hard-liner than Fidel. Whatever happens, it'll be interesting to watch.
