Bummer you don't qualify for USAA- it is for military-types OR children of military-types (my father is a Marine). I have it and it rules.

I had renter's insurance through State Farm (and I'm assuming that they sell in NY). It was really reasonable and provided very good coverage.

I use Traveler's and it runs me about $160 per year. My policy includes temporary housing in the event my apartment burns down.

I had it through Allstate (in NY, but not NYC. Downtown Buffalo. Although our crime rates are so much higher than yours, I can't imagine they'd insure me and not you), it was like $100 a year, but this is back when I had a car policy with them, too, which may have made it cheaper.

Man, now I'm starting to think I really need insurance when I move in a week. Although my big fear isn't crime, it's fire. There's been a bunch of arsons as of late in my neighborhood, and fire in an area where every house is wood and about two feet from the next one is a scary prospect. The idea of someone robbing me is scary. The idea of everything I own in the world being destroyed keeps me up nights.
