The kitty litter boxes were floating in the basement this a.m., LOL. That's right, I be flooded in Ohio. More inside, including an important AskMeCha question.[More:]

AskMeCha:

How did the water get in? There's a sandy mud on the floor now that the water has receded.

There's a drain in the floor where the utility tub empties. Does that empty into a sewage sewer? DID THE WATER BACK UP THRU' IT?

IS THAT MUD OR SHITE ON THE FLOOR!?

FULL STORY:

LOL, I've been meaning to clean up down there, and now I have no choice.
;-)

Work was cancelled today because the roads are flooded, so I went back to sleep till 9:00, got up and had coffee and had a look at the cat litter in the basement, saw the litter boxes floating around, and went out to Lowe's to buy wading boots.

I lucked out. Some people have 4 or 5 feet in their basements, me = 1'. And it's great that today is a Friday and I'm off work and have the weekend to clean up.

I could only get maybe 16" high (bright yellow) waders (that suck compared to Specklet's) at Lowe's so I went to look for taller fishing boots at Dick's Sporting Goods and they were closed. I need rubber Wellingtons. They're good to have when you're an "animal person" and aspiring rehabber. There's a small pond nearby that the City is drying out and I'm due to go rescue some turtles out of it when the water-level goes down far enough. Otherwise the turtles will wander away into an area surrounded by roads and a close-by swimming pool. Not good. So I needed those boots anyway

I guess, for me at least, the flooding was kind of for the best. Weird, eh?

But somebody somewhere KNEW this was gonna happen. The house I live in has never flooded in 25 years or more, but RIGHT NOW the City is installing new storm sewer pipes RIGHT IN FRONT OF WHERE I LIVE leading to a holding pond to prevent flooding. They were just a little too late.

I swear, the gov't knows about global warming, even the ones who deny it. They just won't admit it because it's bad for business interests who are big lobbyists.
dude where the heck do you live? I lived in the Cincinnati metro area for nearly 20 years!

and no, I dunno whether it's mud or shite down there, sorry!

Shane,
Forgive me when I say this but if the sewers are backing up, it's a little from column A, a little from column B.

Just, uh, bleach a bunch when the waters recede and bear in mind that it's probably more silt than acutal poop, just cause poop moves through the system and silty particles hang out on the sides of the pipes. Happens where I work in downtown NYC right by the Hudson every time it rains heavily, funky.

hmpf, entire wrong end of the state, as usual. seems like *nobody* I know of is from Cincinnati anymore. oh wait, that's because all the smart ones left...

good luck with cleanup. that can't be fun. Reminds me of what I miss the least about living in Ohio: the wailing of tornado sirens signalling that spring has arrived.

was the street itself flooded or just inside people's houses? if it's just inside it's definitely from the pipes/sewage/etc.

and what Divine said--sterilize everything down there--there's probably uccchhh mixed in with water.

THANKS FOLKS!

I feel icky now...

More flood warnings for my county and my specific town today. If FEMA declares it a disaster area, at least I'll be able to buy and write off a new shop-vac and even get reimbursement for clean-up and such.
