Lance Bass comes out --after he's reported at Provincetown with Reichen from Amazing Race.
Back in '84 or '85, I was watching the super bowl with 6 gay male friends, along with their self-described fag hag.
One of the guys started telling me that in SF, it was an open secret amongst the gay community that Joe Montana and Dwight Clark were an *item* around town. Being seen in the gay bars and bathhouses, etc. etc.
They could tell I was totally eating this up, and piled on with detail, until it got so outlandish that it was obvious that it was made up from the start.
I say good for him. Jonmc and I were talking about this earlier and while he thinks this is a career move, I say that he either a) wanted to get the jump on the news sites or b) just finally felt comfortable enough with coming out.
Goodness knows most of the *NSYNC fans I know (and yes, they're all mostly grown women) really don't mind that he's gay and imagine him as having boinked his bandmates anyway.
Well, slap my ass and call me Sally. I have inside dope that Paul Stanley of Kiss and Mike Monroe of Hanoi Rocks swing from both sides of the plate as well.
Pups--It's probably stable in the "well at least he's not trolling for handjobs in the park like George Michael" sense of the word. Look at them date! Just like straight people do!
Good for him. It really, really sucks that anyone has to be in the closet in this day and age.

That's true, in theory, but times haven't changed as much as we'd like to think. We here are mostly educated and urban folk. But we are not the majority.
I realize that pups. Especially since I live in a very conservative town. I just meant that I wished we'd have moved past that kind of prejudice by now.
with celebs, it's a self-imposed closet (and manager-imposed). more and more of us non-celebs come out every day, and feel that those celebs who hide are just holding us all back and perpetuating the idea that it's something to hide.
Bass said he's not ashamed, but if that were really so, he would have come out before being caught. He purposely stayed closeted.

What we have here is a case of crass commercialism - when the only thing you've got to sell is your image, you're going to be very sensitive to the signals you're getting from the target market for that image. Pathetic, I know.
