Who thinks we need some sort of private Waste hub/network thingie?
Wow, that sounds pretty sweet.
posted by mike9322 25 July | 14:57
We need at least 1 person with a fixed IP/URL, I believe.

posted by mudpuppie 25 July | 15:00
I had to look up "posthorn", what is the significance of said post horn?
posted by getoffmylawn 25 July | 15:35
Getoffmylawn: the posthorn & the name ‘waste’ both relate to Thomas Pynchon’s novel The Crying of Lot 49.

I'd be up for that, but I don't get a fixed IP from my ISP, I don't think.
posted by brainwidth 25 July | 16:09
Would we really need a fixed IP? Or might a URL from dyndns.org (or a similar service) do the trick? My router automatically updates my dyndns domain name with my current IP address, so that might be an option -- unless waste requires the actual numbers.
posted by nixxon 25 July | 16:17
nixxon: nope, I think we need just one fixed URL, so the others can reach it, and then it broadcasts everybody's IP to everybody else. Wanna give it a go? We'd need the URL and then exchange public keys.
posted by signal 25 July | 16:19
That'd be cool, and I'd be behind it. I'm on cable, so my IP isn't static, so I couldn't host. :(
posted by Zack_Replica 25 July | 16:30
Yeah, I'm up for giving it a try. I'll see if I can get waste set up some time tonight. My internet connection has been pretty spotty lately for some reason, but assuming I get it all worked out and remain connected, I'll send you an e-mail with my key.
posted by nixxon 25 July | 16:39
ok, if everybody wants to email me their keys, I'll import them, and send you nixxon's URL later.
posted by signal 25 July | 16:41
Ok, sent mine.
posted by Zack_Replica 25 July | 17:00
ok, I got a dyndns account, so we can start right away. Email me for the URL and my public key.
posted by signal 25 July | 17:05
ok, Zack and I are connected. Anybody else?
posted by signal 25 July | 17:18
last i heard, XP and OSX clients dont talk to one another, so keep that in mind.
posted by keswick 25 July | 17:24
How do I connect to this?
posted by matildaben 25 July | 17:51
I am soooooooooooo connected. Geekified.
posted by mike9322 25 July | 17:54
matildaben: download the waste client, set it up (it has a wizard), then email me your public key and I'll send you mine and a URL to connect to.

*looks at house key confusedly*

Um, do I have to get a copy made at K-Mart or something?
posted by SassHat 25 July | 18:00
Sass - see signal's reply to 'tilda.
posted by Zack_Replica 25 July | 18:14
emailed you mine. . .still not understanding it all but sounds fun.
posted by danf 25 July | 18:14
danf: it's a private, secure p2p network. You share some folders on your computer, and can browse or search everybody else's.
posted by signal 25 July | 18:21
Basically what the program does is set up a secure network. People download the program and generate a key (encryption code) with it. Then you send that to signal, and he'll send you his URL, and his key so that the program can connect to it. When you're connected, you can chat with the other users in an IRC fashion, and if they've chosen files to share you can browse those files and download any that you like, and people can do the same with you. Note that this isn't manditory, and you can choose what to share.
I have a lot that I haven't linked to, like the entire Ultraviolet series, and the last season of Dr. Who (with Tennant as the Dr.) as well as a few apps and games. We're just sussing it out ourselves, but it's looking pretty good.

i want in!
posted by amberglow 25 July | 18:54
i emailed you, sig...

posted by amberglow 25 July | 19:05
signal and I are still trying to figure things out.... like why connections keep getting dropped. :/ We'll get it going, though.
posted by Zack_Replica 25 July | 19:16
FYI: sig's gone to eat and I need to go get food + vodka, but the connection's left open on sig's end. This is why you may not get a reply to any "hello's".
posted by Zack_Replica 25 July | 19:18
well, it doesn't work for me... : [
posted by amberglow 25 July | 19:26
It seemed to work great earlier. Once we get the kinks ironed out, this will be very cool. (though I'm concerned about the possible lack of pc/mac compatibilty -- that would probably be a deal breaker for this group...)
posted by nixxon 25 July | 20:05
Anberglow - Under Preferences, have you added signal's signature key? Also, under Pending Keys, make sure that all three boxes are checked so you can receive everyone else's. Ummm. If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure. I was thinking of taking screenshots of the windows for setup. See if that works first tho...

SourceForge is shut down for maintenance at the moment.
