25 July 2006

I popped my acupuncture cherry today. And it was awesome![More:]
The area around my fibula scar has been swollen and very tender since my second surgery in January. My chiropractor has already been doing ART twice a week on my ankle to get me back to running pain-free; that has been producing remarkable effects. Today I mentioned that the scar has been tender and he perked right up, left the room, and came back with acupuncture needles. 9 needles, a little electricity (administered by the receptionist, my absolute #1 crush of all time), and 20 minutes later, and the scar feels amazing!

I swear to god, this guy is some kinda miracle worker.
Yay Mike! Acupuncture is wonderful!

Well, this here'd be the thread for it, goml! Share!

Mike, you and I are scar brothers! I've got the same one on my right ankle too. Did you have work on the inside of the ankle as well?

For years, I had a badly wired nerve where I could poke the scar and it would make my pinkie toe tingle.

I need to post a picture of all the hardware that used to be in there holding my ankle together after that stupid, stupid drunken night long ago in Arizona.

Yep, fenriq, tib-fib fracture January 2005. Hardware removal January 2006. Good times. Some interesting pics: 1 2 3 4

I'll skip the details of my shoulder injury, and just say: I am not saying I don't think accupuncture CAN work for some things, I am saying it gave me worse, more severe, dibilitating pain that I never had before I got the accupuncture, which only got worse with each successive treatment. I mean my shoulder hurt before, but it was MUCH worse after the accupuncture and gave me new pain I never had before. And I don't buy the - oh, you are in pain because things are loosening up - rigarmarole.

Dang. Sorry to hear that, goml.

I know from experience though how different procedures vary in effectiveness. I was having plantar fasciitis problems a few years back and my chiropractor tried ART, which didn't help at all and may even had made me feel worse. But a foot and ankle massage that I got on a cruise, not even thinking about my heel problems, completely took the pain away for over six months. And, even though the ART didn't work for my heels, it's working wonders on my ankle. Odd.

Yoga, chiropractic, massage, traumeel cream, and Flexeril worked for me. I really like accupressure massage. Oooh boy!

By the way mike, that phrase really skeeves me out. It's bloody awful.

richat, I've gotta say I love the word skeeve! Skeevy, skeever, skeevinacious, skeeviskadilly. Its got something!

And mike, here's a photo of my hardware. I think you got one more screw than I did. Did they screw your ankle in place while it healed and then remove one before removing the rest later?

fenriq, mine only took two surgeries, and the second one was actually completely voluntary. I told my orthopaedist that I wanted to continue running and he told me I needed the screws taken out or I'd run the risk of breaking one. He took out all the hardware at the same time, a little over a year after the accident.

I am able to run pain-free, but I've been very tight and sore for about four days afterwards. This is what my chiropractor is working to fix. I may be stupid for continuing to try to run on it like I used to, but I've tried other cardiovascular sports, and nothing gives me the rush that running does. Cycling comes close but I don't currently have a bike, nor do I have the financial means to really get back into that (very expensive) hobby in the fashion that I would want to, at least not until I have bought another house. So I run.
