They say if you can remember the 60s you weren't really there. Judging by the letter, these guys are also still smoking a fair bit, so perhaps they should be forgiven for thinking they invented the name "Dupree". Still, the Dead clearly have a claim to prior art.
Oh wait, wasn't that itself an "homage" to "Betty and Dupree"? I'm sure omiewise can tell us.
Oh, wow. I had to go back and look twice, because the first time I thought it was just a really stupid, unfunny, fake-letter satire. The second time, I saw that it really is on the actual Steely Dan site. I'm speechless.
I think arsey has it. Stelly Dan are on tour (not selling too many tickets, guys?) and the film is in cinemas. I think wendell had it too (over at the Other Place):
Hmm. I remember in when writer Doug Moench and artist extraordinaire Mike Ploog "borrowed" the name "Steely Dan" for a character in their comic book take on the Planet of the Apes universe, but that was a definite homage.
All set in a swamp like that, I always figured the creators were listening to a "Best of" Credence disc with Born on a Bayou on it, not to mention maybe Countdown to Ecstacy or Pretzel Logic, which just increased their cool factor.
Was that too far unrelated from the topic at hand?
;-)
I think it's hysterical. :) Steely Dan always did have a really strange sense of humor. (They're also right Owen Wilson whores himself out for a lot of awful movies.)
