Happiness is a Saturday... 7/22/06 [More:]

Sooooo, what are you happy for today? It's Saturday, so I suppose that is enough.

DIGRESSION!:

This entry ("An 'A' on your spelling test") bugs me a bit. Sure, we all wanted to "fulfill our expectations" and make the parents happy, but let's face it: School set us up like a bunch of damn hurdlers in a sprint, as if we're all the same and all have the same goals.

But school was there FOR US, to help us find our own PERSONAL strengths AND interests and paths in life, not to treat us as if we're all the same runners in a ridiculous race for an unnamed and probably worthless prize.

SO, it felt good getting an 'A' on a test. But did we ever realize that school was there to serve us, and that we were not there to fulfill the expectations of school and feel as if our worthiness was in question if we did not?

How do you feel about it all, now that it is long past? What effect did it have on you?

Are you going to prepare your children for the stress they may (unnecessarilly) face in the "educational" system?

(Full disclosure: I'm usually qwuite a good spelleer
;-)
Perhaps I shouldn't bother.

I'm also drubk.)
Is it so bad to attempt to balance or "round out" every student? Such a rounding might dull a sharp arrowhead, but even the ugliest stone looks nice and polished after it's been in one of those rock tumbler things.

Oh, and I'm happy that Rosemary and I went to the matinee at the discount theater to see The Devil Wears Prada. Not an awful movie but not at all worth $10.

Looking like a drunk pirate. I doubt I'll wear those except for treasure hunts.

OoOh. Oooh. Oooh. Reminds me of "Pound down the nails that stick up."
;-)

Sorry to get all serious, folks. Carry on!!

I thought that the point of school was to instill in me the mental toolkit that I'd need to handle adult life.

But I find I am missing a hammer.

Yeah, yeah, and some people are allergic to warm puppies so that one sucks too. Or maybe this just actually means "...satisfaction in a job well done" without sounding quite so stodgy.

Happiness is cooking up a mess of sour cream-slathered fajitas and refritos for your wife's First Annual 39th Birthday, washing it down with beer, and waiting waiting waiting for that brick to digest, a million miles from any war zone.
