Funny how things turn out [More:]This morning (last night for most of you) I was in #bunnies bemoaning the fact that I had to go to Chelsea today and I didn't want to go. Yes I know there is a song about it.

Anyway, I schlepped over there, it's a long trip for me on a horribly hot and humid day. I was speaker at an AA meeting, and it was pretty small, 8 people. There was a lot of construction work going on outside, so we had to close the windows, it was uncomfortably hot, but I did my best to tell my tale of woe and recovery.

After the meeting an elderly lady asked if she could talk to me. We walked to a nearby cafe, had coffee and some food and talked, and talked, and talked. We had such a lot in common, even though she's in her 70s and our backgrounds are very different. We've made plans to meet up again.

So out of something I didn't really want to do this morning, I've made a new friend.
You never know where something good will come from. Congrats.

I concur with arse_hat's assesment. I agree that it is, in fact, "very cool". I would stop short, however, of characterizing the event as "completely awesome".

Unless she turns out to be, like, a 600-year-old vampire, or maybe the eccentric-genius heiress to an ill-gotten fortune who leaves you her wealth and knowledge with the caveat that you use your newfound riches to become the ultimate vigilante.

That would be completely awesome.

But it's great that you've made a new friend. AA's cool like dat.

I would just like to use this opportunity to not that english place names are so interesting; they seem so fascinating that I want to visit them all: Essex and Chelsea and Wolverhampton and Coventry. What the hell could a "Stoke-on-Trent" possibly be? I feel like I have to know. And is everyone in Kingston-upon-Hull a waistcoat-stuffed baron wielding a swagger stick?

Well, you know Essex and Sussex (and maybe Wessex? Is there one?) come from the Late Roman/Early British times when they referred to the "East Section", "South Section", etc.

I think that's true, isn't it, Jan?
Oh... Middlesex is the Middle Section. See, it's not dirty at all.

Unfortunately.
Out of curiosity, essexjan, do you know where Birkenhead is? I recently acquired a family wedding photo from 1880, and my grandmother wrote under it that it was at the brides' family home in Birkenhead. Someday I'd like to get to the UK...when I hit the lottery.

There is a Birkenhead in Auckland, NZ, but I don't think it os the one you mean. On the insanely small chance that it is, it is on the North Shore just next to Birkdale.

Birkenhead is near Liverpool.

Thank you! Yes, it's in England, thanks dg.
