My wtf of the evening So me and the mr. are sitting watching some of Velvet Goldmine that tivo decided to tape for us. Satellite of Love comes on, and I start singing along, and mr. gaspode is all like "is this a real song?" And I just stare at him. [More:]Then we lather, rinse, repeat for 20th Century Boy. He has some weird 10-15 year gap where he knows absolutely no music except for protopunky stuff like the Stooges, New York Dolls, MC5. Then he can catalogue every single hardcore band and singles from the late 70s to today. Odd.

Anyway, I had to share. Carry on.
Velvet Goldmine? 20th Century Boy? Ummmm... that's some sort of music?
Oh... wait: Velvet Goldmine is a movie, huh? Never heard of it. And Satellite of Love is supposed to be a song?

Honestly, I've never heard of any of this stuff.
Wiki.... Lou Reed and U2, and I never heard of it. Huh.
Wow. I was all like "how can you not know Satellite of Love? It's one of Lou Reed's most famous songs!" Obviously, I'm an asshole. Oh well.

So gaspode, you married a much younger man? Cool.

Yeah, I think Mr. Gaspode is a man who knows what he likes.

And he likes you!

gaspode, neither one of those songs was all that well-known here in the States... I don't think I heard either one till I was in college in the mid-80s. But I know what you mean about finding weird "gaps" in your mate's musical knowledge- Mr BP and I have that occasionally, and it cuts both wways since we're 9 years apart in age. It always seems so weird, though. :)

(Also, I'm glad your Mr. finally got to hear "Satellite of Love"!)

He stole that title from Mystery Science Theater 3000, right?

I generally don't know songs by title or lyrics, but by tune; this is why I don't really know any Lou Reed songs. Also, Lou gets little Baltimore-area radio play.

I love the song, and I will join in shaming Mr 'spode for not knowing it. Damn you all and your excuses!

I also love Bowie's "bum bum bum"s in that song. Classic.

Yay, richat! Shame away.

It wasn't that I thought Satellite of Love was overly popular, it's just one that I thought had permeated into society's collective knowledge bank... (because it's used in films? I dunno). obviously I was wrong.

And the T-Rex song? Yeah, I guess I can see how an American wouldn't know that one.

Anyways, yeah those gaps in knowledge are weird. We get them quite often given the more English-centric upbringing I had. Although! although! One of the ways mr. pode first made me laugh was by knowing a lot about The Young Ones. So the cultural gap wasn't *too* wide.

Jen knows almost none of the music I consider seminal, so I am used to it. But, to her credit, she sometimes thinks some of the stuff I play is cool. So, she has that going for her.

For example, the first time I played Aimee Mann's Whatever for her, she went cuckoo for Aimee Mann. And, same for Sugar's Copper Blue.

You should see the looks I get from jon sometimes. The only records my parents (my father and adopted mom, that is) had in the house were 78s of Annie Get Your Gun, and you had to risk a teeth buzzing electric shock if you wanted to use the record player. I had the radio, though, so I know a lot of songs, but not who's singing.

Mr. Rossi and I are 10 months apart and went to the same jr. high and high schools. He didn't start listening to bands like the Velvet Underground or The Clash until we got married. But he marvels that I can't sing along to "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo." We are of different worlds.

That's pretty funny, jrossi. hmmm. mr. g is 3 years older than me, but he was never a radio-listener. He had his Jethro Tull phase which segued into his hardcore/straight-edge phase in high school, and he's... never really left that. Except with the starting drinking bit.

Actually, holy shit, why does any of this surprise me? Duh! For his last birthday I bought him a buncha Bowie "for his education".

I guess it's kinda like when I run into someone who's never heard Gesualdo.

Or like when people don't know what show Mr. Drummond was on.

My students had never heard of MASH. Or the Stones. (Talk about feeling old...)
