17 July 2006

It HOT in NYC! "How hot is it?!" So hot that I am wearing shorts and NO FLANEL! I did spill some coffee on my shorts but they're khaki cargo shorts, so they seem to be drying unobtrusively.
Also, I can believe I spelt flannel wrong.
posted by jonmc 17 July | 08:21
I'm also wearing this t-shirt, purchased in scenic Red Bank, NJ, just to make a point.

It's typo day at metachat!

how hot's hot? it's 32 degrees here (90 F) which is hot enough for me. 35 (95) forecast for midweek. Alltime UK record is 38 (100.4) which was set three years ago...
posted by altolinguistic 17 July | 08:49
Right now it's 86 F with 50% humidity and rising. And the coffee has dried inconspicuously, in case you were wondering.
posted by jonmc 17 July | 08:53
I have a forecast of 100 F today and 101 F tomorrow. I could deal, actually, but I don't have a/c in my car, so I'm trapped in the office all day and may have to divest myself of clothes to drive home. (I'm not in NY, In VA, few hours south of DC.)

It's pretty freaking damn hot here in Pennsylvania. It's the kind of hot that makes you feel nauseated if you're outside too long. The absolute worst is getting into your black car with the black interior after it's been parked in the sun for a few hours. It's like getting into an oven.

My daughter is in flight to New Mexico right now. She' working in New Mexico and Texas for a few days, and is going to Mexico for a day or two. I don't envy her.

this would be called what..skinny-driving? I see traffic-stops and "I'll let you off with a warning, miss," in your future.

It's hot, but not that hot up here today. The weekend saw some 31-33 degree weather (mid-90s) but I think we are sitting at about 24 right now, BUT, I think the humidity is at 350%. Yup, I rowed to work today...
posted by richat 17 July | 09:02
I believe it is mandatory to wear footwear when driving, and women may not drive bare chested. Other than that, you should be good, depending on local statute and state ordinance.
posted by rainbaby 17 July | 09:02
AWESOME shirt, jon! Yay for Red Bank.

I've done skinny-driving once...well, ladies' undergarment driving anyway. I was helping a friend move, and she had two cars, one a 1976 station wagon with no A/C. She asked me to drive that one. It was mid-August; there was no other real choice.

It's hot here as well, about the same conditions reported by jon. However, there's always a cooling sea breeze here. The air is rarely still, which helps immensely.

posted by Miko 17 July | 09:03
err. . .local ordinance and state statute. Geez. That's not a typo, it's a braino. I must have the vapors from the heat.
posted by rainbaby 17 July | 09:04
I took a lot of pics in Jersey, they'll be up soon enough. I may give you terminal homesickness. We had a few drinks at the Dublin House and had burgers and pork roll at Jim's Burger Haven.
posted by jonmc 17 July | 09:05
(miko, by the way, some dude in the Dublin House told me that the Quik Stop in the movie is on 36 in Leonardo, we drove down that to Sandy Hook and didn't see it. Is he right? I hate to think I missed a chance to pay tribute.

It's so hot my sweat is sweating.

I am considering staying at work all night so I don't have to go outside again.

Hugh: I had a dream about you last night - you came around to our place and set up a grill and cooked us dinner. You're so helpful!

Dear Sun: Shut the F*** up already. We get it, we understand your massive power. But, dood, I've got THINGS that need doing.

It's only 10:30 here in Toronto, we're 11 degrees away from hitting today's high and the humidex is already 100F. Smog and humidex warnings in effect.

I went out for my morning coffee and felt as if I was chewing a slice of hot dirty air.
posted by jinxiemalone 17 July | 09:34
I can't imagine. . .one day it got up to 90 while I was there and I thought I was gonna die. . .

I wish all of you shade, a fan, and some a/c when you least expect it.
posted by danf 17 July | 09:38
95, high humidity. I've lost a pot of petunias, some impatients and osteospermum. Cukes are taking a beating too, so I expect them to die off soon. Green beans, tomatoes, and the hot peppers are thriving though.

Can't wait to see the pics, jon. I'm already a bit homesick.

Quick Stop is actually just off 36, so you probably did go by it, just couldn't see it. It's a block down or so.

I love just knowing that you & Pips were sitting in a place I love as much as the Dublin House. It's changed ownership and atmosphere a fair bit now, but I have some really warm amber memories of the place. I worked there for a little over a year in my 20s, just living in my hometown, playing music, getting my act together and enjoying what was then a really funky arty scene. One of the happiest times in my life in many ways.

And the "Dub" was home to some really quirky characters. The owner was a local high school English teacher, born in Ireland and raised in the Bronx. His father eventually owned 14 Irish pubs in NYC. So Kevin was raised in the business, and he combined his two loves -- Irish and English literature/history and pubs - beautifully in that place. Conversation was king. Behind the bar there was alway a solid array of reference books kept at the ready for settling debates - thesaurus, dictionary, NY Times Desk References of various kinds, and of course, the Guiness book. Among the staff, there was Timmy, a fast-talking, wound-up city mouse of a fellow, small guy, in his 50s, shanty-Irish from Rumson, who was the greatest compendium of local historical knowledge and trivia imaginable. He washed dishes at the Dub and wrote a fascinating local history column for the paper, and knew everything about everyone's family and every building in town. The Wood brothers, from a big upstanding local family of 9 kids, bartended -- as did Rob McMahon, writer, brilliant guy, and major Yankee fan, who now owns Murphy's Pub (a former speakeasy -- it's in a residential neighborhood house) in Rumson. Pat and Howie were another set of brothers, cooks, who could reduce us to weak-kneed laughter easily. Larry was a foul-mouthed, angry little person, somewhat ratlike, as in a Roald Dahl short story. He handled maintenance and crises. He could fix anything, but it came at a price - a stream of profane invective delivered throughout. He was easily placated, though, by a can of Bud at the end of his shift.

The place has four floors, including the scary cool moldy earth basement, and the large attic just full of old Guiness memorabilia, tap handles, restaurant fixtures, old St. Patrick's day decor, and the like. Running up and down stairs all day - especially with full trays - kept us in sprightly shape. And, as with just about any fancy Victorian of her era, it was widely suggested that the house was haunted.

The place was kind of magical in those days. There were no jukeboxes (just live music, and sessions), no video games, no lounge couches (dining tables instead), and no TV. It was more than a drinking establishment - it was a community living room, welcoming all classes and types, allowing people to meet and and exchange jokes and ideas, the kind of third place that is so hard to find any more.

Glad you checked it out. I have two other suggestions for you --email me!

The bartender and a guy sitting next to us were both long time residents. I was half tempted to ask if they knew you, but realized that "Miko," probably dosen't mean anything to them. I also got a nice Ramones box set at Jack's Music Store.

Jack's is great!

Yeah, I wasn't Miko yet when I lived there. That came a year later when I moved to Philly.

I can't claim I knew him personally, jon, but I knew people he knew. He went to a different high school and there wasn't a lot of overlap between our schools, being across the river from one another. But we're close in age, so there were few degrees of separation. Of course, at the time, he would have blended in - one among many witty creative misfit semiurban Jersey boys - he wasn't a celeb yet.

My mom did interview him for her paper when Clerks went to Sundance, before it really hit, and liked him a lot. He gave her a preview copy of Clerks, which we still have. The first cut had a really depressing ending - I've never actually seen the ending it was released with.

It's 91 here in Queens, and expected to hit 100! The air conditioner in our bedroom's dead, but the one in the living room lives... we may have to move the mattress in here tonight...

rainbaby, I sympathize... my old Escort, which I had in Miami, didn't have a/c either... and I used to have to drive with the heater on full blast to keep the engine from overheating in traffic... I just about died... I used to stick my head out the window like a St. Bernard.

Miko, we so enjoyed Red Bank... thanks again... in the end, we didn't even mind that they'd closed the park/beach on Sunday (full, perhaps?)... given the heat, it probably saved our skin, in fact... and the margaritas at Dublin were yummy...

All in all, a great birthday weekend!

posted by Pips 17 July | 16:26
Pips and jonmc, you really have to get to Sandy Hook early on weekends. The park fills fast and usually gets closed by noon. You could always cruise on down to Seven Presidents Park (named because 7 presidents used to vacation there) (but sorry, no nude beach.). Or stop by Keansburg for the boardwalk or the free beach. It's on the bay, so no waves, but you can get wet and they've been doing a good job keeping it clean. The boardwalk is somewhat old (some original rides) but they do have a bunch of newer ones, and of course there's always Runaway Rapids across the street. It's a great water park-about twenty bucks for 3 hours, or you can buy combination tickets to it and the boardwalk.
Red Bank is my hometown too, but when I used to frequent the Dubliner, it was located across from the train station in a small, dingy one-story building. I had my own bar stool, in those days! Kevin, the owner, his daughter Moe worked there, along with Bobby and Tommy the bartenders, Chris the bouncer, and Dawn the cook. This was in the late '80s, and they were good times! I'm glad you guys had fun!
