Oh the vanity of me ... [More:]In Waitrose this afternoon, pondering what bread to have (too much choice confuses me) the guy on the patisserie counter said, as I had my back to him, "is there something I can help you with, young lady?".

"No, I'm fine, thanks", I said, turning round, only to see that he was actually addressing a 10-year-old girl.
Oh yeah, that's funny. I get called ma'am now by teenagers. I want to rip their faces off.

I realized a few years ago that any time a guy on the street whistles, or makes a "Hey, pretty lady!" comment, I assume it's directed my way.

Which.... I've decided is not a bad belief. It shows a "healthy sense of self-esteem," as a friend of mine used to say (as opposed to "an annoyingly huge ego").

essexjan, it might not have been obvious, but I truly did think your story was funny! Don't be scared...hee.

I wasn't scared, the smiley is me beating a hasty retreat from Waitrose.

In your wienermobile?

Ikkyu2 sent me a link for applying to be a wienermobile driver, by the way, if you're looking for a career change.

In my local Sainsbury's there's one particular cashier who, if I am buying a bottle of wine and looking particularly miserable/distracted/stressed, will ask me for ID, which always makes me smile and return to the moment (I'm not old but old enough to appreciate such things!). I'm glad there are people like that around.

I still get carded 90% of the time (which I've just started to appreciate).

What I'm still learning how to deal with, though, is the reaction when people see my actual age. I don't mind "You look much younger." But I don't like "Good for you!", because it makes me feel like I should be walking around with a cane. And the other day, when this young little waitress checked my ID, her eyes got real big and she said, "Oh! I was way off!"
