12 July 2006

Andy Towle has a picture on his at website and notes:

"I shot this last night from deep in New York's East Village. For the next few days, the sun will be setting at a latitude that puts it in line with the deep canyons of NYC's streets. This happens twice a year but you won't be able to see it again until next Spring, so Manhattanites, get out there at around 8 pm to watch the show."

NPR's segment on the May occurrence: Manhattan Prepares for Sensational Sunset

"The sun will set in a blaze of glory in Manhattan Sunday [May 28, 2006], fully illuminating every cross street during the last 15 minutes of daylight. Astronomers -- and druids -- are looking forward to the phenomenon, which will be repeated on July 13."

It was really cloudy and rainy this evening, so it might not have been viewable.

What does that sun-straight-in-your-eyes do to traffic? For about a week in the spring and fall, the sun sets straight down the line of Victory Blvd. in North Hollywood/Van Nuys. When I lived near there, I avoided it at all costs.

Looking at the maps around where I'm living now, thanks to the changing angles of the coastline and the foresight of San Luis Obispo's founders, arranging the town at a 45 degree angle, there aren't many streets likely to get that, except for Tank Farm Road, part of Foothill Blvd. and the ironic East/West-facing South Street. And right on the longest day of the year, the setting sun was getting close to troublesome on Hwy 101 through Pismo, but it soon moved back out of the way.

There are some bridges in Portland that are deadly to drive across at sunset. . .the Fremont especially.
