OSX Open Source Office Suite: Where?→[More:]

NeoOffice is ungodly slow. I can't get OpenOffice to work (why?!)... please help! I'm on 10.3.9

Would AbiWord help? They have an OSX version.

OpenOffice requires X11 to work. It'll probably be as slow as NeoOffice.

I second AbiWord, but be aware that its .doc conversion facilities aren't good.

Personally, I use Apple Pages. It's not free, but it does what I need.

I'm concentrating on Word Processing here. If you need spreadsheet as well, I don't know what to recommend.
