03 July 2006

It's a whole new world up here. So we moved to the Upper East Side (well more Yorkville, really) on Saturday. [More:]Damn, my friends are awesome. I had 2 friends in town from New Zealand, and Saturday was their last day in town (before heading back to NZ) and they gave up the whole day to help us move.

Also, check this: we did not know what the inside of our apartment was like until we got their with all of our stuff. We are in staff housing for my husband's hospital, and it's just a crapshoot what you get. We were very lucky and have a great place. Downside: much smaller (half) than last bedroom. Upside: living area like, 5 zillion times bigger. We can have people over!

But we can't get our interweb connected until the 12th, and I can't find any unsecured wireless to steal in the interim. Sad!
That's super gaspode! I'm glad moving went well, and uh, can I come over now? :) I'll bring some exotic swedish stuff.

And what kind of whacked out unconnected hood are you in? no wifi? Wow. booh!

Argh, and how weird is it to move to a place you've never seen? Do you need to paint any? other peoples decorating can be hideous.

Moving in the summer is hellish! Ugh! But glad y'all made it, and that the new place is cool. :)

Yay, dabitch, you can visit any time you like!

I agree with the weirdness. But no, we didn't need to paint and everythign was fine. Also, the place is saving us $500 a month in rent from the last one. Of course, we're not going to see any of it, as it will be shuffled straight into student loan repayments. Oh yeah, everyone in my building appears to be competent with the securing of the wireless and stuff. Assholes.

Oh that's good. But you'll have to de-nerd your neighbours. Whats your street/hood like? Found good spots to hang and good places for food buying yet?

I wonder if, when you meet the neighbors, you could ask to borrow a cup of wifi - you do have a date certain for your own installation. Would it be a social icebreaker, or a social faux pas?

So have Bentley and the Willises dropped it in yet?

$500 a month against student loan repayments is a gift from God.

mazel tov! enjoy... are you way east or not so much? how far to the subway?
posted by amberglow 03 July | 19:39
It's a nice little area. Yeah, amberglow we are *way* east - right by Gracie mansion - 89th and york.

very residential, certainly not like the east village where we were before. still, it's only a 15 in walk to the 86th st subway stop. There looks like some OK restaurants close by, too.

well, you have parks, and Asphalt Green is very cool and the water's close...you're close to Spanish Harlem--explore 116th st, and there are good markets around too. 86th st is ok too--good for movies and brunch--Sarabeth's is over there too, no?

(the east 80s are really a starter neighborhood for a lot of people--murray hill now too--there are a ton of buildings there called dorms bec it's all people just out of college who are sharing and stuff)

Rode the M4 for the whole route today, so maybe came near you. ..it was foolish and took up all the time we had alloted for the cloisters. . .had to get right on the A train to get back to check out from this hostel and wake daughter up (in reverse order). We DID get a nice tour of parts of upper manhattan though . . .

I am really sorry that it did not work out to meet you and everyone else here. . .perhaps next time.
