It's Devil's Night in Darwin →[More:]Today, as well as being Canada Day, is
Territory Day, when the Northern Territory of Australia celebrates the granting of self-governance.
The NT has always been "frontier country". They do things a little differently up here. In particular, fireworks are legal on Territory Day, and they are able to be sold the week leading up to it.
This is a little like inviting an alcoholic to an open bar. Everyone buys as many fireworks as they can in as short a space of time as possible, and sets them all off on one day of the year.
It's been going on about 12 hours now (not counting the early starters from last night) and my dogs are about to book themselves into therapy. We broke the rules and let them hide inside for the evening, but it hasn't helped much. I'm hoping people's fireworks supply runs out pretty soon, because it's getting a bit old. How do all your Fourth-Of-Julyers and Guy-Fawkser deal with this shit?
