Sign-twirlers In the last year or two, I've noticed there's always some listless-looking guy standing in front of any given strip mall, holding a sign advertising one of the businesses inside. [More:] This is an interesting article about those guys... how bad the pay is, even how dangerous it can be.
"A lot of this food is coming out of my pocket, man. I feed them lunch. For a while, I was feeding them breakfast, too, but I couldn't afford that shit. But you gotta give 'em water. It's not easy, man, in this direct sunlight, but I tell them to take breaks. If they don't feel good, sit the fuck down. 'Cause we don't want anyone hurting out here, not having enough water, food or whatever. So I take care of them the best I can. I've done all the shitty fucking jobs, I've been up on roofs, I've picked up fucking trash, so I know how it is, man, in 100-plus degree heat, doing the same fucking thing. It sucks."

I love how this guy talks.

My sister was once offered a temp job from an employment agency as a... drum roll please... as a TWINKIE. They wanted her to dress up in a Twinkie costume and stand on some corner somewhere and pass out free Twinkies.

Uh, she passed on that job.

They do this all the time here and I have yet to be compelled to change my shopping behaviour because of it. I am always reminded of why plasma "donation" centers do so well in college towns. Or did when I was in school.

I thought these people, like waiters, were known as "actors".

Dammit, I had just started doing research on this for an article.

I mean, thanks BP!

Yeah, I've seen them around here, holding some furniture store signs. I just think it must be a sucky, boring job.
