T-shirt Ideas? [More:]
Hi all. I am currently in an Azerbaijani language class. We have to design a class t-shirt. Usually when these sort of t-shirts are given to me, I wear them for the photo and then give them away, because they are so dull. Therefore, I want a GREAT t-shirt that I will actually wear. I'd like it to be funny and nice looking.

Stipulations: it must be 4 colors (but the background t-shirt fabric can be any color, pretty much) and say Azerbaijani SWSEEL 2006. It can poke fun at politics in Azerbaijan, but shouldn't be offensive (I suggested "Azerbaijan: Bringing Dynasty and Democracy Together since 2003" (the old president's son is the current president - yuk.) - this was voted down.)

Ideas?
Azeri proverbs I like:

"My little pilaf and I won't have headache." meaning, I'm satisfied with what I have and don't want to any hassles.

"Cheap meat never makes a good soup." meaning, You can't expect something for nothing. A proper investment is needed to achieve something serious.

(the old president's son is the current president - yuk.)

We've got a little of that here, too.

Yes, but at least, IN GENERAL, we count on our elections not being completely fraudulent.

If you're an American citizen and a taxpayer, you're paying for my class. Thank you. :) (We have to buy our own t-shirts though.)

I've wanted to go to SWSEEL for years but never made it happen yet.

Wolfdog, Bloomington is nice and quiet.
If you get a sublet and cook for yourself, it is WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY cheaper than living in the dorms.
The professors are amazing.

The non-academic activities are so-so. If you're doing Russian, you have to do at least one of them, as I understand. But those of us in Central Asian/Baltic languages don't have to.

I'm interested in Georgian and they don't always have sufficient funding or interest to run that. What led you to Azerbaijani in particular?

Georgian has run for the past 5 years, that I know of. The current professor, though, is retiring next year, so next year may be a slight problem. They never have problems funding American citizens for Georgian, for sure. The Georgian I class is huge this year and Georgian II is pretty big too.

I already speak Armenian quite well, Russian decently, and some Turkish. A friend of mine took Uzbek last year and liked it a lot. I figured that learning Azeri would be a good idea and having class from 8:30-12:30 each day is a great way to let me finish my masters thesis in the afternoons...

PS, I took a year of Georgian. If you've never learned a language that has noun cases, I'd suggest starting with something else, just for a year, to understand noun cases, then move into Georgian, which has a harder alphabet and more irregular grammar.

But I have. And I know the Georgian alphabet and can read & write a bit, only I can't get the pronunciation and fluency on my own - that's always the tricky bit, and I'd enjoy being immersed in it for a while.

Oh, then you'd do just fine. :) I'd also recommend a "noun case" language with an easier grammar, but if you're good with it, Georgian is fun.

Let's let Azerbaijans be bygones!

Taxpayers paid for our class, but they made Azerbaijan own t-shirts!

Everyone get your Azerbaijan on! (+/- on)
