28 June 2006

We are flooded! [More:] The road that leads out to the main road is closed, which means I have to go a few miles in the opposite direction and loop around to get anywhere. Not really a big deal.

What IS a big deal, though, are the number of cornfields here that are completely underwater. It's freaky. I didn't realize we had gotten THAT much rain. Poor farmers. Hope they don't decide to just chuck it all and sell out to developers. Although this may extend the flood plain and prevent them from developing the land. In which case, again, poor farmers.
If you see a dude with a lot of animals building a boat, it's time to hit the road.

I would not be surprised if the people around here had stocked up on gopher wood just in case.

Bummer. A few years ago they had bad flooding here that pretty much turned a part of the county into an island for like three weeks, no access except by boat.

Its hard to remember that parts of the country are suffering right now, we've just got hot, muggy weather these days (which makes for an excellent excuse to drink mojitos!).

Oh no.

My boyfriend is in NC, and about to get on a train back to NYC. The train already has a projected delay of 3 hours. Eeeee. I'm just hoping he doesn't get stuck somewhere for a long period of time. I went into Mom mode and make sure he brought lots of food and water with him on the train, just in case.

I just checked- the train is scheduled to go through DC, VA- lots of places that are flooded or on flood watch. Looks like it's going to be a long night.

Hope he gets there with a minimum of hassle, TPS.

And stock up on corn, people!

Gak. Yeah the sun is out today for the first time in about 5 days. We hd about 20 feet of rain. It's nice to see the sun, although it is a giant sauna out there right now.

Best wishes for an uneventful train trip.

How did I miss that development? I must not be paying enough attention.

Geez. My whole family is in the thick of it (parents MD, bro/s-i-l, nephew VA). And nobody's answering the phone. Maybe they're just off at Chuck E. Cheese's or some other Pizza-Time Theatre, playing video games and hollering like the rest of the kids. Crap.

Yea- according to the Amtrak site (if I'm reading it correctly), his train is 4 hours behind schedule AND still in NC. It was originally scheduled to arrive in NYC at 9, which was delayed before the train even left NC. The site has taken down any estimated actual time of arrival. Eeee.

His train ended up arriving at Penn Station at 6:47 a.m., btw.
