This is the music that got me through. [More:]

Well, maybe that's a bit dramatic... :D I took last week off work to repaint one of our bedrooms. This is the third room in our house I've had to de-mildew and paint, which means even painting the damn ceiling- UGH.

So anyway, I had my CD boombox and was jamming to tunes the whole time, and these are some of the ones that became my favorites (i.e. LOTS of repeat play) during the job.

Calexico- Bisbee Blue The new album took me some time to warm up to, but now I love it, and this tune is one of the best.

Dixie Chicks- Take The Long Way This is one of those songs I can't help but sing along with, especially while driving. Perfectly fun summer pop.

Jackson Browne- The Pretender Some of you saw my story of how I was introduced to this song- I really like it.

Nico- These Days And as long as I was listening to Jackson Browne, I dug out Nico's first solo album, since she recorded this song (written by Browne) before he did. That's him on guitar, as well.

Stereolab- French Disco I played all three discs of "Oscillons From The Anti-Sun" a lot last week, but kept going back to this track over and over.

NIN- Right Where It Belongs I've had "With Teeth" since it came out last year, and liked it a lot, but suddenly last week I couldn't get enough of it. (Paint fumes, maybe?) I love this song because it's one of Reznor's quiet songs, which are usually good and which he doesn't do enough of.

Whenever I do a big clean-up, I listen to The Toy Dolls. Not sure if you'll like 'em, but it can't hurt to have a listen. They're punk, but not in-yer-face, melodic, great musicians (Olga is a stunning guitarist), and all their songs are goofy and upbeat. No swearing or bringing down the government, just Coronation Street and girl troubles... and the perils of doing laundry.
Here's a bit of the lyrics to "The Ashbrooke Launderette"

You'll Stink, Your Clothes Shrink
Your Whites'll Be As Black As Ink
Your Best Red Jumper Turns To Pink
All Crumpled Up And Wet
We've Been, Have You Been
To Get Your Dirty Washing Clean
Are You Clean You Couldn't Have Been
To The Ashbrooke Launderette

Sounds intriguing, Zack... I'll check it out when I get home. :)

If you go to the Toy Dolls' website (linked above), go Multimedia, and then Video, scroll down to "Toccata live" (Realmedia file)- it's the boys doing their rendition of Bach's "Toccata in Dm". One guitar, one bass, one drummer and an amazing show of skill. :)

"The Pretender," is one of Jackson Browne's best. "Rock Me On The Water," is his absolute best.

I still haven't warmed up to the new Calexico album yet. I've heard a few people say it takes a while to grow on you, so I'll keep giving it a chance. I just loved the last full-length and the Convict Pool EP so much.

While we're talking about Calexico, let me take this moment to recommend Tulsa Drone. Yes, a friend's band, but definitely come to mind when I think "If you like Calexico...". Perhaps slightly moodier.

Yes! Thanks! I really needed this today! Haven't heard the song in years.

Thank you so much.

You're welcome! It's off of their 'History' CD, and is different from the album version, but still bouncingly good. Anything else you can think of that you'd like, let me know...
