Nah, no way he was reading from the same book that everyone else has! He was totally out of line. I had to cancel AOL accounts twice (one at work and one at home) a few years ago, and while I did go through the long long long waiting to talk to someone, both times the person that helped me was pleasant and made it really easy and fast to close the account. No questions were asked, beyond the "are you sure we can't do something else to make you happy" question asked up front. One time. And then they expedited the process. This guy was annoying as hell and refused to hear what the customer was saying.
I wish they had played the entire conversation, like the part where he asks to speak to the guy's father!
I had AOL very, very briefly while staying with my grandmother and newly single (the best apartments in my area are all online, so it was necessary).
it took, hm, almost half an hour. Even after I told them I wouldn't have a home phone line anymore.
And then they called my grandmother's house about once a week for six months trying to get me to come back (even though I used my cell when signing up), until I called them and had a complete meltdown on the phone, accusing them of trying to manipulate my 80 year old grandmother.
And the sick thing is, I'm in NY, where the attourney general won a small fortune from them because they were making it so difficult to cancel! (I brought that up when I had my little freak out... and the calls stopped. Go figure.)
