Classic American Popular Music [More:]I'm making a series of CDs for a friend who has only heard the not-so-great side of American/English language music (exports like Britney Spears, etc.)

What are some songs/albums that would be a good introduction to American/English language popular music. She's 19 and currently living in the States, so skewing on the new side of things is good to help her keep up with her peers.

a list like this could go forever.

I'd make some important additions:
- The Rolling Stones -- the Hot Rocks comp album is a good shortcut

- Creedence Clearwater Revival -- Chronicle, Vol 1.

- You need some hip-hop. For a 19 year old, I would not go any more old school than Dr. Dre's Chronic (maybe NWA if you must). Jay-Z's black album, NAS's Illmatic and some Notorious BIG would be good too.

Beatles Greatest Hits albums: 1, red, blue.

All pretty decent samplers.

I would have to say some of them wouldn't be that culturally relevant for an introduction (Joplin, Cure, even Weezer, PJ, or Nirvana these days).
