The "GOD CHILD" Naming a child "GOD", good or bad?

I was watching an old episode of one of my favorite video blogs called Chasing Windmills and this particular episode raised the question about naming a child "GOD".

What are the moral, ethical and legal issues involved in such a thing?

[More:]Would this be legally banned by the court system and brought before the supreme court? Would the public be able to handle such a thing?

What do you think? I am not asking as a serious question but more of a "What if..." situation. And NO I would NEVER do this!
Did you know that many European countries have "naming lists" of allowed baby names? If it's not on the list, you're out of luck. I'm pretty sure that GOD isn't on any of those lists.

I'm pretty sure that there's nothing that would stop an American couple naming their child GOD. Nor anything stopping an individual changing their name thus.

Why would the state care? I'm pretty sure you can name your kid (or yourself) Jesus Christ Fuck Shit Cock Face perfectly legally, so GOD would be perfectly fine.

Of course, you probably couldn't get away with it in Europe.

It's probably not on the pre-approved list of names in Germany, but heck, my name is Åsk, so it all depens on where in Europe. ;)

And hey, if the supposed son-of is ok, as in Jesus, and the mother-of Maria is ok, and other Gods like Thor and Freya are ok, why not step it up to naming one "God"?

It would be hella funny every schoolday. -"God?" -"Present."

We don't have approved name lists in the US, and I'm sure people have named their children God.

There was a guy here in town, down the street in fact, who used the name Spirit of God in Jesus Christ Ascending, or something like that. He was quite mad.

He cut his wife into tiny little pieces one day.

A problem was encountered while processing your request.
God is not in the top 1000 names for any year.
Please try again.

It'd totally be allowed, but it's setting the kid up for a world of teasing.

I think it might be a problem if an adult tried to get their name changed to God tho--people have to go to court for that stuff, and a judge can deny the request (there have been Santa Claus cases and stuff).

dabitch - "It would be hella funny every schoolday. -"God?" -"Present."

A "substitute" teacher in high school humoured my pal and I with being called Godboy and Satan (we had to write name-cards on the first day) for three months (when the sub left).

She had a fine sense of humor, Praisegod, and he guessed you had to, with a name like that. Her parents were some particularly virulent stripe of SoCal NeoPuritan, and had taken the name Satansbane before Praisegod had been born.

Bill Gibson can still shine, every once in a while.

Grace Slick and Paul Kantner named their daughter god (small g) but later changed it to China after the blotter wore off. If it was allowed back in the early 70s, I can't imagine the law would be more restrictive now.

But - I do know a guy who went to court to change his name to Fuck. The judge said it would be illegal, so he went with Fish instead. Remember Country Joe and the Fish Cheer? That's the idea. (This guy has Fuck tattooed on his neck and everybody calls him Fuck, so I'm not sure what difference the name on his driver's license would make.)

If by 'Europe' you mean 'you can name your child whatever you like in the UK, they used to have restrictions in France in the form of a list of names but don't any more, and there is a list in Germany, and other countries probably have different rules' then you're probably right.
