The only show out of all of those that I have watched more than an episode or two of is West Wing, so I have no idea how our tastes compare. But here goes:

Battlestar Gallactica - One of the best Sci-Fi shows ever, one of the most intense shows on television right now. Two seasons out there to watch thus far. It is a good drama even if you are not crazy about sci-fi and the show has twists that make it a bit of a mindfuck like Lost.

Lost (the entire middle of season two kind made me "eh" but the end of the season was nice and the first season was just brilliant)

Boston Legal - I find James Spader highly entertaining, and William Shatner on THIS show (he generally annoyed me, even as Kirk I got sick of him). I think it is the funniest show on TV since Seinfeld at least... but YMMV.

Stargate Atlantis - My brother was telling me that he is watching it in repeats and really enjoying it, and he is not much on sci-fi or fantasy, so unless you have already seen it you might give it a try. You will understand it better form the start if you had seen SG-1 as well, but you will catch on pretty quick. Basically the lost island of Atlantis was found and it was actually a city-sized starship built by an ancient alien race. More of a fun action show than serious science fiction.

House - Really good show if you like the lead character, if not you will hate it. One episode is all you need to see to know. The show does have a really repetative theme to it, but it is fun anyway.

Nighty Night: a very dark (but hilarious) BBC comedy that for some inexplicable reason played on the Oxygen network here in the States.

I'll second Firefly. Did not think about it. Only one season, but it is great fun.

I fourth Firefly. Plus The Office (BBC & American one, now that they figured it out). Arrested Development. Mythbusters. Veronica Mars. The Wire. And FIREFLY.

Wild Palms? Can you get that series anywhere? I always wanted to see it.

Oh, and I just started downloading season 1 of NUMB3RS, so we'll see if that is as geek-love as it promises to be.

NUMB3RS is entertaining but basically a silly crime show. David Krumholz is teh hawt, though (although I know that's not your type).

My Name Is Earl. Do sitcoms count? It's great, I love this show.

Another vote for Firefly, another vote for Battlestar Galactica (I'm hoping to be caught up by the time the new season starts in October). BSG is the only show seriously commenting on the post-9/11 world (well, 24, but hopefully few take that seriously). The 1st season episode I just watched had terrorist interrogations with waterboarding.

And I've loved both new seasons of Doctor Who. Both actors are fantastic (heh) and the companion Rose, Billie Piper, is excellent as well. The whole series, as with Basttlestar Galactica, has been rethought (though in Who's case, with continuity largely intact), and they're doing much mroe absorbing, adult drama with high production values. The most recent episodes have been rated by Who fans as among the best ever.

amberglow, I hope you'll be watching Torchwood and next season of Who, with the bisexual Jack Harkness ...

Anyway, I have no non-sf shows I can recommend at this point, these are keeping my hands full.

- Kath & Kim (over-the-top broad Aussie humor, complete with extremely broad accents)
- Seven Periods with Mr. Gormsby (un-, un-, un-PC comedy set in a backwater NZ high school)

@Eideteker--Wild Palms came out as a two-disc DVD set earlier this year (or maybe late last year). It's quite dated, as I found--William Gibson makes an unfortunate cameo, and there are passages of expository dialogue in which characters explain concepts like "virtual reality" and the "World Wide Web"--but as a period piece it's interesting enough.

@Prospero: Thanks. I do indeed want to see it primarily as a period piece (though the surrealism is a draw as well).

Is BSG really that good? I don't want to offend anyone's tastes, here, but I've heard it's basically a soap opera in space. Or was that only the first season and it's gotten better?

I am surprised no one mentioned Dead Like Me. We really liked it at our house, and I know it's out there in torrent land.

BSG may or not be to your liking, but I can assure you it is not a soap opera in space.
