i hate coffee. but [More:]

I need to start drinking it. I would like to cut carbonated drinks out of my diet almost entirely but I hate tea/coffee and must have my caffeine. I have adapted to iced tea to the extent that I can swallow it without gagging, eventually maybe it will taste good. But I can not even stand the smell of coffee. My mom always kept Folgers and I tried it repeatedly over the years, but after people bitching in that Mefi thread about how bad it was, I thought maybe I would me more likely to enjoy or at least tolerate coffee if I tried a different kind? Speak to me, caffeine-fueled bunnies.
What about hot chocolate?

Why not just kick the caffeine habit? It's not that difficult, and once you do, you won't have all the ups and downs and crashes. It's great.

If you really just want caffiene and you don't like the delivery options available to you, why not start popping pills?

Or, you know, just get off the junk. It's two sucky, headachy weeks, and then you're pretty much ok. I went off the black-bean for about two months and then slowly re-aquired the habit, but I really really like coffee.

Life's too short to waste time doing things you don't like.

But, to answer your actual question, what you need to do is find a place that sells coffee beans, but has drip coffee for sale too, somewhere that roasts the beans on the premises. Go in, order a small of something random, and if you like it great, if you don't talk to the counter dude about what you didn't like about it. Too bitter? Too acidic? Too weak/strong?

Try the coffee at Dunkin Donuts. Try taking all your coffee with lots of cream and sugar. I like about an ounce of cream and two or three teaspoons of sugar for every 12 ounces. Coffee purists laugh at me but I don't care!

For high-end coffee my favorite is Peet's.

Is green tea an option? What about that caffeinated water stuff?

I also vote for kicking the habit, though.

options:

1. caffeine pills.
2. ginseng.
3. batdorf and bronson coffee.

I have been off caffeine for as long as three months before and I am just useless in the mornings without it. So I have accepted that I need the extra boost. I've never actually tried green tea, so that might be something to look at. Thanks for the suggestions.
Coffee is one of the world's most complex flavors.

Me, I love the taste of black, dark, freshly roasted, ground and brewed coffee. It hits some of the same notes for me that really good beer does - sort of a bitter-savory-chocolaty-umami taste. (Ironically, chocolate and beer rank right up there with coffee in complexity.)

Folgers tastes like shit, like boiled cardboard. Avoid.

Slowly approaches Iconomy with a small sculpture entirely of coffee beans superglued together, one by one, until they formed a cross.

Waves it in her face.

I'd start with a flavorful but light coffee, with cream and sugar. (cream, not milk.)

Then once that's okay, slowly reduce the cream and sugar.

Coffee is the nectar of the gods.

I'm not big on caffeine, but occasionally my schedule demands it. I find that coffee is a little much for me caffeine-wise, but black tea has about 50% of the caffeine of coffee (I'm drinking a cup of chai right now, and it smells great). Maybe try some black tea for a while, and if you think you can keep ratcheting down the caffeine level after that, try some green tea. Green tea has about 30% of the caffeine of coffee.
