Ask MeCha. Am I supposed to clean my DVD player? [More:]Topic o' the day in the office: Are you supposed to regularly clean DVD players? With what? And can you use the same thing to clean the DVD drive on a computer? And should you be doing *that* regularly? Or just when there's a problem? I confess that it has never even occurred to me to clean a DVD player or drive. What do you guys do?
I can say that I have never cleaned a DVD player. Not counting those on my laptop and PC, I've had two. And the only CD player I've ever cleaned was one of those five-disc carousels, as it seemed to be more prone to attracting dust.

So ... if you've a DVD carousel, clean it. If not, let it remain subtly filthy.

I would say yes. Both of the set-top digital video players we have in the apartment work better after a lens cleaning.

Of course they both freeze up all the time, make godawful noises every third use or so and are generally frustrating.

If it's a tray-loading drive, I use one of those soft-brush laser lens cleaner deals. I also use 'em on PCs and videogame consoles. Among other benefits, keeping the player clean keeps the discs cleaner, which would seem to promotes longer data life.

Have you ever looked inside something electronic? It's filthy in there.
