LUBRIFILTER: It is time, in our sex life, to introduce a lubricant of some kind.[More:]The first couple years after menopause, she still self-lubricated like a fiend. Now, a lot less so, and it has been an issue as of late. She has stated the willingness and need to explore some kind of artificial lubrication, but it is usually up to me to go out and find out about such things.

Are there any recommendations for what to try? She has a very "organic" mindset, so that could end up being a criteria.

Any suggestions would be humbly appreciated.
Astroglide has always worked will for me, but if you insist on going organic, there's always EVOO, as rachel ray puts it.

Totally natural, and tastes good too - try organic virgin coconut oil.

I take some organic virgin coconut oil and some natural shea butter (you can find both of these at any health food store) and emulsify them by blending them together in a regular blender - probably about 3/4s coconut oil and 1/4 shea. You can use the resultant thick goo for anything from massage oil to hair conditioner to sunburn goop to sex lube to lip gloss to salad dressing. Yesterday I conditioned my husband's leather chair with it. I use it about 3 or 4 times a day for something - I keep some in the kitchen and some in the bathroom and some in the bedroom.

I know this makes me sound like a fringe loony, but I wouldn't put anything on my skin or in any holes that I wouldn't eat. Skin is just one big old sponge that absorbs anything that you put on it, and all the chems go right to your blood and liver. So it's cool that she's looking for an alternative to whatever crap they're probably selling on the shelves at the drugstore.

Not my area of expertise by any means, but a quick google search turns up this organic product.

And steer away from the EVOO. Anything not water-based is going to be a bitch to, um, clean up.

Pjur Eros, or any of the other silicone-based prducts. Do not balk at the $20 pricetag. That little bottle is at probably a year's supply.

Organic? You do not want to be introducing substances into that ecology that either harbor microorganisms or serve as food for such. Synthetic all the way, my friend.

If you want to find out more about CO, this is where I buy mine. And keep in mind that you want to keep a jar of anything that you'd be using as sex lube away from the jar of stuff that you use for lip gloss... ;)

I myself wouldn't know, but I hear Astroglide leaves a greasy film that can be an unwelcome souvenir in the morning. Probe just disappears, although because its water based it can evaporate and lose effect, but it will come right back if any kind of watery stuff is added. I think its made from that slippery stuff on grapefruit seeds that causes them to pop out of your fingers when squeezed.

(I was kidding about the EVOO.)

I recommend heading to your local higher-quality shop and purchasing a variety-pack of samplers, then deciding based on the results.

Slippery Stuff is good in the water-based department. The silicone-based ones just aren't juicy enough in my opinion.

Sampler pack is definitely the best idea. Check it.

This stuff is very good - not too runny (can't stand it when the one's that are more liquid-y go all over the sheets), and all-natural so there's no nasty chemicals. Also, and god only knows what it's for, it's got horny goat weed in it. Which, if it doesn't do anything, is good for a laff.

J-Lube and Astroglide are my favorites. I don't like the taste of lubricant, but the J-Lube recipe can have flavors added to it.

Sure thing, jonmc. That's What America Is All About.

Yeah, stay away from the vegetable oils. They can emulsify. You don't want to be making margerine.

I can't believe it's not butter?

Organic?

One of my uncles knew someone who was involved with a third-world condom-promotion program, and I vaguely remember some story about the lubricative use of the slime from cooked okra.

I wish I could recall the details.

On second thoughts, maybe I'm glad I can't.

Good lord, cooked okra? Whatssa matter with a nice avocado? Make a dip, throw a party.

My mom gave me some egyptian magic to use as a cream to get rid of stretch marks from the baby. Being a resourceful woman, I discovered that it works as a great lube for the ol' in an' out, too.

Jlube: around $10 to make about seven gallons of lubricant

Just for the sake of eponysterical overload, I thought I'd ooze over and squeeze out this comment regarding lubricants.

frecklefaerie: did it work on the stretch marks? I'd love to find something that worked.

Miko, try Strivectin. It's spendy, but it works.

Also, I've heard honey thinned with water is good for lube.

*shudders at the idea of sticky lube*
posted by mudpuppie 12 June | 17:54
A lot of the water-based lubes are sugar-based lubes.

Which kinda sounds like diluted honey. And maybe a little gelatin.
posted by Five Fresh Fish 12 June | 18:24
(Mind, that probably makes agar. Nix the gelatin idea!)

Slippery Stuff is excellent. I'm not sure if it's organic, but it is vegan (no glycerine in it).
posted by grapefruitmoon 12 June | 19:23
glycerine isn't vegan? What's in glycerine?
posted by Miko 12 June | 20:14
There's vegetable-based glycerine (just like there's vegetable-based gelatin), but it's typically derived from animal fat. As in, 'triglyceride.'
posted by mudpuppie 12 June | 20:21
Glycerine is a major by-product of making biodiesel, whose most common feedstock is soybean oil. It's neither animal nor vegetable, since it exists in most oils. It is not mineral, which is the whole point of biodiesel.
posted by warbaby 13 June | 10:05
I work at a sex toy store, and I'd recommend Juice's or Sympathical Formulas, both of which are glycerine free and "organic" as you say.

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Miko: Tough to say. The year before getting pregnant I had lost about 30 lbs, so I think I may have had more elasticity with my skin than I would have otherwise. I have some very slight ones below my belly button that only show when I suck in my belly. I've heard that nothing can really work, but I'm pretty happy with how it worked for me.
