05 June 2006

Focus. Discipline. Motivation. Help. I need it.[More:]So, the month of June is scaring me. I'm in a position I find all too common in my life: I may have made too many committments, and now I have to deliver on all of them. I need to find a way to stay calm and productive and keep it all under control. For the next 25 days. Yipes.
Here's something that will help - I played Women Drinking Whisky on my set last night and Tangerine was doing harmony with it.

Your gorgeous voice gives me shivers.

Those two travel weeks set me back seriously. Among the things I have agreed to do:

-Open an exhibit by July 1 which does not exist at all except on paper. Purchasing, sourcing, production, installation
-Write a band profile due this week
-Perform at a sea music festival next weekend
-Work at another museum the weekend of the 25th
-Perform at a gig downtown on the 29th.
-Shepherd someone special through important surgery this Friday, then recovery
-Create a new daily program for my job

I think that's it. That's certainly enough. How do I prevent myself from looking at that list, and just running in circles screaming in panic? Because I can't afford to waste time running in circles.

[On preview] thanks, LT.

You let me do the band profile for starters.

OK, that would help. Here's the band. Throw me some language. Anyone, everyone.

1. Prioritize.
2. Break big things down into little things.
3. Delegate everything you can. (Remember, I am a currently unemployed museum professional ;-) - need someone to write & follow up on loan letters, contracts and stuff?)
4. Stay cool, admit nothing.

I'd sort them out into like things: performances are more or less the same, though you have different set lists to work on if you want; you might look at specific date projects (like the museum stuff) as chunks themnselves, and try to regulate how much time you let overlap (thinking about museums while you work on performances, for example, may be counterproductive); the daily program for your job thing sounds like something you've had to do for a while and have put it off because it's not that pressing -- if it wasn't that pressing when you weren't busy, then it shouldn't be that pressing when you have so much other stuff to do, especially shepherding someone through surgery, which is the main obstacle, I think, because it's the least predictable and most time/energy-consuming thing on your docket. So I'd let these things all fall into their different niches, breathe enough that they can stay there, not let thinking about more than one of them at a time set off any panic-o-no-I'm-running-out-of-time freakouts, and realize that it's really not all that much work, and that the important part of everything is to keep a smile on your face this month, while you do all of these things; all of them are things you want to do.

Meeks - I can do this profile for you if you want. How long does it have to be? When this week do you need it by? Are we talking just a page long blurb or what?

Let me know and I'll smash something out tonight and have it to you in the morning, okay?

Thanks, LT, but I was just kidding. As Hugh says, I really do want to do the profile. I love this band and have followed them for a while, and I'm trying to highlight them so they can connect with the local crowd. But I appreciate your willingness to help. :)

But I've already bought the crayons, Meeks!

Oh Miko, you'll be fine...deep breaths. Repeat after me, "I am a very with it, together, super smart lady and I will be fine." Small pieces, darlin'.

Remember, most surgical centers also have wireless internet or are hardwired in the waiting rooms, so you could use your down time there for purchasing and sourcing stuff for your July 1 deadline...
