02 June 2006

Motorhead is so my new favorite band. Please help me find more to love.
[More:]So when I was on the plane, I got the pleasure of watching all five hours of VH1's Greatest 100 Hard Rock Bands. It inspired me to buy some Motorhead (Greates Hits) and AC/DC (Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap). Now, you'd think that since I love "ironic" metal like Andrew W.K., I would have taken this musical journey earlier. But no. So tell me more about exciting metal, keeping in mind that some of the VH1-praised artists (Cream, Led Zepplin) annoy me. (I have a hair metal compilation, too, so, there you go.)
If you like Motorhead, I'd recommend the following: Early Metallica (Kill 'Em All), Diamond Head, Plasmatics, Girlschool (Motorhead with boobs), Tysondog, Saxon, Venom, Raven, Anthrax, early ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rose Tattoo, and even some old shit like Blue Cheer and Grand Funk Railroad. All balls-out and aggressive, but with dynamics and a sense of fun.

\m/! (welcome to the fold! your Jack Daniels and ditchweed are in the mail).

I think I need links. YSI links. (Also, I still don't drink whisky.)
posted by dame 02 June | 12:50
Jack Daniels isn't whisky; it's the intersection of corn and God.

DUDE: YOU ONLY NEED ONE WORD AND THAT WORD IS TURBONEGRO. I HAVE SPOKEN.
posted by Lipstick Thespian 02 June | 12:53
Yep, Metallica said everything they needed to say with Kill 'Em All.

yes I am compelled to say this every time Metallica is mentioned
posted by gaspode 02 June | 12:58
All you need to do is get a CD player and find a cd with "Born To Raise Hell" on it (YSI Pending) then jam a toothpick in that cocksucker and rock out forever.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 June | 12:58
Metallica said everything they needed to say with "Hey, let's start a band."

*Ducks, leaves, will be back with born to raise hell.*
posted by Divine_Wino 02 June | 13:03
Well, many of the basics have already been covered.... Umm so...It's not older metal, though it is slightly revivalist, but I hear a touch of Motorhead in High On Fire, particularly the Blessed Black Wings album.

Sorry no, YSI, but if you go here you can listen to a track, or go to their myspace and listen to a few more.
posted by safetyfork 02 June | 13:03
Sorry, dame and others-- it turns out the first link routes you back to the artists page, you have to click on "downloads" link to get to the song. You should just go to the myspace page it has more tracks anyway.
posted by safetyfork 02 June | 13:05
You MUST listen to the Sex Slaves. Lemmy's a fan of theirs (no kidding!), and they've been my new favorite band since Mr. Kitty caught them at the Double Down in Vegas last August. One of their biggest songs is called "Thank God for Jack Daniels." (Listen at their MySpace page.) We're actually driving from OH to NYC this weekend to see them again.
posted by ferociouskitty 02 June | 13:06
she said no ironic metal, LT.

Oh, Jon, I remember that summer well. Wait, no I don't: because you & the Wino are awesome!

Thanks, everyone. I missed you so much.
posted by dame 02 June | 13:11
If you become a full on hescher chick, you will become that chick. I need to put a shirt on.

(also, you will dig the Girlschool, who have worked with Motorhead, as has Wendy O. from the Plasmatics.)
posted by jonmc 02 June | 13:13
Lemmy's a fan of theirs (no kidding!)

Lemmy likes all kinds of weird stuff though and he's admitted he doesn't really listen to much music these days. Last time I heard him recommend a record it was Evanessence.

That's not a comment on your band by the way, just an aside.
posted by dodgygeezer 02 June | 13:16
Honestly, fuck Metallica. They put out two great albums - Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets. Kill 'em All is pretty good too. After MOP, they seriously lost me. Garage Days is pretty cool I guess.
I can't believe what an incredible pack of pussies they are now.

Now Slayer...
posted by Hellbient 02 June | 13:18
I agree with your assessment of the current Metallica, hellbient, but back in the day they were (along with Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and the rest of the crew) a much needed return of old-school metal virtues. But, yeah, they did fuckin' wuss out and become whiny-ass rock stars.

People have already recommended the obvious so here's one from left field.

I've recommended Lightning Bolt to a few fellow Motorhead fans to mostly favourable reactions. You can grab the fantastic Dracula Mountain here. It is simultaneously the greatest and the stupidest thing you'll ever hear (in fact I once described them as being Lemmy on bass and Animal from the Muppets on drums).

I'll back dodgygeezer on Lightning Bolt being seriously badass in a quirky drums, bass, and wrestling/holloweenie mask with tiny microphone strapped inside kind of a way. Brutal live.
posted by safetyfork 02 June | 13:31
Ah, Lighting Bolt. I remember when they were playing at Fort Thunder with Black Dice and it was just us dorks and RISD kids. Those were the days. (Thanks, dodgy. I must admit I find them hard to love: I need *some* melody and sense.)
posted by dame 02 June | 13:32
It's a popular sentiment, but after they lost Cliff it was all down hill.
posted by safetyfork 02 June | 13:32
Turbonegro is not fuckin' ironic, jonmc; they're fuckin' Swedish, dammit, and though the rest of the world may take the Swedes with a touch of irony, they themselves are as sincere as the Scorps, Gott fuckin' Verdamm it all!

TURBONEGRO MUST BE DESTROYED!

Well, I'll be at *wince* The Pussycat Louge/CatBar on Saturday night. I'll be the fat one. I'm trying to convince my husband that New York doesn't have fat people and I'll be immediately identifiable as a tourist, but he doesn't believe me.
posted by ferociouskitty 02 June | 13:32
Ah, Cliff. Coming up on 20 years gone for that crazy bastard. He is still missed.
posted by jonmc 02 June | 13:34
JonMC - Turbonegro have a song called Turbonegro Hates the Kids. What more do you fucking want?

Dame - check 'em out. They're the shit. I really don't get into the metal much, but i love these guys.

Even though they've become bigger, I still think Lightning Bolt is fairly unassimilable writ large. But it has got to the point where it's hard for them to still play everyshow off the stage so I can get the just us / those days sentiment.

On preview, wow. I'm a sloowww typer today.
posted by safetyfork 02 June | 13:37
Trust me, New York has fat people. Usually they sit next to me on the subway when there isn't enough room. (But I wedge my big shoulders in, so . . .) Anyway, the myspace says 12a Saturday, which would really be tonight; is that a mistake?
posted by dame 02 June | 13:38
We got fat people ferociouskitty, just the other day I realized I often use my beerbelly as a third hand. That's right, my toolshed's prehensile.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 June | 13:40
It is supposed to be Saturday; they're in Philly tonight. And since y'all do have fat people, I'll be the fat, somewhat scared-looking person. (Only my 2nd time in the city, the other time was in high school on a nice, well-chaperoned school trip.)
posted by ferociouskitty 02 June | 13:46
Don't be scared. Manhattan is far safer than your typical inner-ring midwestern suburb these days.

Alright, so Turbonegro's Norwegian. Same square heads, different jackets.

'Initially the band had two running ideas for band names; Nazipenis and Turbonegro. They were advised that a band named Nazipenis would never sell records, so they chose Turbonegro as an arguably more consumer-friendly choice. The band's name raises some eyebrows, and for that reason their first releases were sometimes branded TRBNGR, perhaps to preclude backlash against what some consider to be a racist name. However, the band's stated motivations are anti-racist, trying to change the attitude of racism and nationalism perceived as prevalent in parts of Scandinavia. Founding member Thomas Seltzer once said, "A turbonegro is a large, well-equipped, armed black male in a fast car, out for vengeance. We are his prophets."'

I believe they're sincere. I believe they're playing with fire. I believe they're out of their fucking minds. And I believe they ROCK THE PANTS OFF THE COMPETITION!

Any band with a song called Hobbit Motherfuckers is AOK in my book, 'nuff said.

That's good. Since I was planning on drunkenly stumbling around in the wee hours of the morning looking for a good bagel. Thank goodness this came along.

Also, the Science Fiction Idols are pretty good at this kind of music, if I'm remembering correctly.

Ooh, welcome to MetalWorld!

Of course, as folk have mentioned Motorhead, Judas Priest and early Metallica (through Master of Puppets) and Iron Maiden are necessary. I'm a big fan of Deep Purple and early Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath, Paranoia, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath), but if you don't like the early '70's metal, you may not be into them.

Unmentioned so far, but truly RAWKIN', dude: Megadeth, Ozzy's first album (Blizzard of Ozz), and Voivod.

On the newer side, you may want to look into Tool and Wolfmother. But be careful with exploring the newer bands -- a lot of the "nu metal" is REALLY crap.

Congratulations on taking your first wonderful steps to the world of neck pains and tinnitis. You'll never regret it.
