ROACHES
The cat chewed them
like raisins. They were
everywhere: hamper,
cabinets, cereal boxes.
We chased them with cans
of Aqua Net; trigger
fingers on nozzles, that
sweet chemical smell.
They dashed up walls,
across cracked linoleum.
Slipped their supple backs
under the refrigerator grate.
The rare white one,
captured in a cup.
How soft they were,
smashed with flip-flops,
fists. Only the boys
used their fists.
Bodies nothing more
than smears.
The color of ear wax,
mom's tiger's eye ring.
