Ask MeCha: Blender Recipies So, my jaw is wired shut for the next three to four weeks ... [More:]My wife and I went out to dinner last Friday night (our anniversary dinner - 16th - but a week late). I had twin filet mignons, one with truffle sauce and one with bearnaise, and my wife had a stuffed pork chop. We each had a beer before dinner, and shared a (very nice) bottle of Merlot. In other words, we weren't stinking, falling-down drunk.

After dinner, we stopped at the local "Irish" bar to listen to a few songs and have a Guiness or two. I started on my first pint, and excused myself to go outside for a quick smoke. While outside, I started feeling "funny", and the feeling got worse when I went in. I started sweating, and getting cold chills, and my wife, sensibly, asked if I wanted to go home. I agreed, but only made it to the front door before I went out and fell like a tree - right on my chin. Broken jaw, wired shut for a month.

So, any good blender suggestions?
I should add that three days of tests in the hospital showed nothing obvious that would have caused the sudden fainting, which may actually be a good thing - if it was just another odd occurence (which does happen from time to time), I can deal with that. The doctors want to me to wear a heart monitor for a month, though, just to be sure its not some type of irregularity.

I'm guessing that you'll be giving the Guinness / Merlot / Steak combination a miss?

Holy crap that sucks. Sorry to hear it, commish.

Do you like Jamba Juice?

I used to blender up a concoction of frozen strawberries, bananas, yogurt, honey, the juice of half a lemon, and sometimes other frozen or fresh fruits when I got home from work. I did it because I liked the way it tasted and it felt healthy.

After about a month of this I'd gained ten pounds, so I stopped. But I'd say that's pretty good evidence that it's quite nutritious. :)

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope your heart tests give good results.

Er, ice. The concoction I mentioned is about 50% ice by volume.

Oh no! Not my dear sweet yhbc!!!!

You'll get tired of fruity things and will need something savory eventually, which means pureed soups.

Basically, cook any kind of vegetable(s) you like in stock until they're tender. Blend. If you want extra calories (and after a few weeks, you might need them), add cream.

Blended meats sound kind of icky to me, so I'd suggest beans for protein. Bean soups are yummy. White bean and ham? Lentil and potato? Lots of good stuff you can make.

Take one bunch of asparagus, hack off the woody bottom third, rinse. Microwave for 3 minutes with a splash of water. Throw in the blender with a can--or if you're really fancy, one of those organic boxe--of chicken broth. Blend. Warm up to taste in the microwave.

Tonight I had lobster bisque, but I cheated - it was frozen.

I think I will be doing plenty of the bean thing, but that may need additional straining. We tried a strawberry smoothie when I first got home today and I found that the strawberry seeds quickly clog up the grill work holding my teeth together, so I'm worrying about the beans.

On preview, the asparagus sounds good too.

Yhbc, invest in a strainer.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear about your accident! I second pureed soups. Strain the bean soup through cheesecloth if you're worried about stuff getting caught in the grill work.

Take it easy.

Scody was in the same predicament in the last year or so. You should ask her.

Damn, yhbc. Glad you're ok. (Except for the drinking your meals part.)

Yow. Have they ruled out space aliens yet? I never rule out space aliens.

Watermelon, ice, vodka. Not nutritious, but hey--summer's coming and you'll get sick on straight vodka if you drink too much.

I could also give you the recipe for my patented brussels sprout daiquiri, but then I'd have to kill you. On second thought, no I wouldn't.

Another vote for the soup stuff, including gazpacho and other cold soups. Might be worth investing in a food mill or chinoise if possible to make sure everything's as smooth as possible.

Taffy.

And stop falling down, you bastard!

Hey, that sounds just like how I broke my arm! Including the sweating and cold chills part. It's a scary experience.

Space aliens, I'm telling you!

Okay, seriously. How scary. And extra-crappy that it was on your (rescheduled) anniversary night. Whuffles? (To you, too, cmonkey.)

yhbc, you are getting to be a real clumsy fool in your old age!

Seriously though, sorry to hear of your fall and I hope your jaw heals OK (better than yor leg did, at least).

Can't help you with the blender thing, I'm afraid.

Wow. That totally sucks. And I mean that in so many different ways...

Poor Commish!

World's fastest soup: some canned pumpkin, some chicken stock; grate in a little cheese. (The only cheese I had in the house last night was pecorino; wasn't sure how it would turn out, but it was fine.) Plus black pepper and whatever other seasonings you like. You don't even need a blender for this one.

Hope you're feeling better.

You poor thing. My favourite blender recipe is equal quantities of ripe banana, milk and vanilla ice cream.

Yikes. And here I am with a garden variety hangover - I think I may be glad to have that if a busted jaw is the alternative.

Sounds like the next month will be a good opportunity to get skinny! Lots of smoothies, any fruit, would be my 2 cents.

I'd recommend vegetable purees and if you maybe adding silken tofu to some of your blender concoctions for protein. Miso soup?

(get well)

ikkyu2- you probably gained weight from the sugars! fruit can be really high in calories too!

Don't forget the old Prince song: Raspberry Puree!

1 can yellow split pea soup + 1 can chicken broth + curry powder to taste. It's nearly smooth; strain the bumps out.

Good luck & take care of yourself!
