What's your favourite song... →[More:]that was composed before 1900.

Dvořák's Symphony no. 9 (From the New World) is a personal fave. Movement 3 rocks pretty damn hard. Get the mp3s here.

DJ Dick Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra is also a personal fave. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good pop song.

I always loved Full Fathom Five from The Tempest by Shakespeare. At school we used to sing an arrangement of it that's very different from the slow, traditional one that's usually sung by Ariel in the play, it was very stirring.

The lyric used to creep me out when I was a kid.

Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that does fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:

I like Dylan's version of House Carpenter. It is, apparently, the oldest song he ever covered, with new arrangement by Bob. According to wikipedia, it is a "new rendition of the 16th century Scottish ballad "The Daemon Lover,"".
