My boyfriend did the laundry for me because I've been crazy stressed out and busy. A few weeks ago I lost a sock behind the washer (in the dark wet place). He dug it out with a curtain rod and handwashed it for a long time, and then washed it in the machine with the rest of the clothes.

Now I have two socks again. This almost made me cry it was so nice.

When my date and I parted ways he insisted I take his umbrella in case it began raining again.

When I was working at Best Buy, we only got 15 min. breaks if we were working only six hours. I had brought a package of Swiss Cake Rolls (aka Ho-Hos) as my snack, but they were stolen out of the breakroom fridge. I didn't have money to get something out of the vending machine and wasn't going to get another break. So when I got back to my cash register and a customer replied to my greeting with a "And how are you doing?", I said that I wasn't doing too good because someone stole my snack. I groused and grumbled and finished up the transaction.

Five minutes later, she comes back into the store and hands me a whole box of Swiss Cake Rolls that she had just bought from the grocery store across the street and tells me to have a nice day. I tried not to take it but hey...

I had a terrible hangover Sunday and had to finish grading then pack then drive 4 hours to St. Louis where I am teaching this summer. When I got back from grading my wife had packed for me--not just clothes but also kitchen utensils and sheets and towels and stuff for the apartment. It was a great relief!

This wasn't the last nice thing someone's done for me, but it is one that I remember really well. I was working at a summer camp as a dishwasher when I was like 17. We were going to do something on the weekend (I don't remember what), and I couldn't go because I didn't have cash. Some stupid reason, and this was before ATMs. A friend gave me 5 bucks or something. I told her I'd pay her back when she came back the next time. She said "Don't bother, just give 5 bucks to someone else with the same stipulation, to loan it to someone else". I think I've done that about 100 times now since then. So if someone's loaned you 5 bucks and not wanted to be paid back, it may have been from me.

The biggest nice thing someone's ever done for me is this: April 2005 I was flying out to Ohio with USAirways (big mistake) and they decided, due to 'lack of crew' to cancel ALL (yes, every single) flight out of Charlotte airport that night, so I had no connection to Columbus. The earliest they said they could re-schedule was Tuesday (this was Saturday night).

I went up to the booking hall where there were literally a couple of thousand people and we all had to line up to rebook. I had no working cellphone but someone lent me theirs so I could call George and let him know. I was really, really upset, I had no clue how I was going to get to Ohio. George offered to drive down but it was about 600 miles.

As luck would have it, out of the thousands of people in the hall, the family in front of me in the line (a big group of 15, four generations, on their way home from a beach wedding in the Caribbean) were also going to Columbus. We got talking (well, we had to line up for 3 hours, what else could we do) and they'd made a plan to cancel their tickets, hire a couple of vans, get a motel for the night and drive up next day.

They insisted I came with them, they totally looked after me, wouldn't let me give them any money for the motel, van hire, gas, food, anything, and were just completely and utterly kind to me. One of the moms said "I know how I'd feel if it was my daughter stranded in a foreign country".

So what started as a nightmare turned into a really positive experience. We had a wonderful drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains and I became good friends with my van-mates, kept in touch and will see them when I'm in Ohio at Christmas. They delivered me right to the door. (My luggage, thanks to US Airways, arrived 3 days later)

The random kindness of strangers. It blew me away.

(We stopped at the first motel we could find, we were exhausted, it was about 3am by this time. It had a sign in reception which said 'No Refunds After 30 Minutes'. But it was only for one night and I could've slept on a clothes line in a hurricane by that time.

The mister okayed a puppy. I've wanted a puppy for-freakin'-ever (even before I knew there was a mister). Of course I could have gone and gotten one anyway, but it really is something we both had to agree on.

My ex dropped off our daughter's swimsuit for Water Fun Day at school tomorrow so I wouldn't have to make the trip to his house.
