Hint time: The first and last words are pretty unique for the English language.

So, if I understand correctly, you filled in the rest of 'sequoias' after mudpuppie guessed it (but not 'huge,' because that's wrong?)? If there were O's, U's, or Q's in the first two words, would you have filled those in as well?
posted by box 16 May | 15:19
Yes, yes, and if I'd thought about it, I would have. But if you think about it, since she only guessed one word, would it count?

I fear I'm losing my audience, so I'm going to fill in those letters right now.

B, P

Not sure about the middle word, though. Maybe it'll have a B, K or P in it.

Bookkeepers Love Sequoias.

But why...?
posted by mudpuppie 16 May | 15:43
I admit it doesn't make much sense, but I wanted to write a phrase that contains two of my favorite words in the English language.

"Bookkeepers" is the only word that has three sets of double letters in a row.

"Sequoias" or its singular "sequoia" is the only word that has all of the principle vowels in it.

These fun facts have been brought to you by the Encyclopedia Brown books. Reading is fundamental!

Encyclopedia Brown's full of shit. How about 'revolutionary'?

Well, fuck!

I always hated the Encyclopedia Brown books as a youth. Here's this nerdy kid whose explanations would never stand up in court, and, when he confronts the evildoers (nine times out of ten one of the town bullies) with some cock-and-bull story composed of conjecture and generalization and circumstantial evidence, they'd always confess. Even by the standards of mystery stories, this seems unrealistic.
posted by box 17 May | 10:23
When you put it that way, okay. But I just really loved them as a kid and read all of them in the library mulitple times. To each his/her own, right?
posted by TrishaLynn 17 May | 10:27
Indeed. And it's not like Encyclopedia Brown was the first detective of this kind--among others, Perry Mason usually followed a similar format. And the E.B. books got me into reading mysteries and crime fiction, which I greatly enjoy. Also, anything that gets the kids reading is a-okay with me.

I remember once when my dad brought home a whole bunch of "remaindered" books from the Kmart he was working at. One of the things I read from non-cover to cover was an Alfred Hitchcock book that was written very much like the Encyclopedia Brown kinds of books. From that one, I learned about puzzles and how a house can sometimes have its roof taken off.
