"Florida in fear as alligators go on killing spree!" [More:]

Florida was in the grip of an alligator scare unprecedented in its history last night after a spate of attacks by the reptiles left three women dead in less than a week.

The animals' sudden appetite for human flesh "has gotten everyone in a panic," said a trapper who later caught the 400lb specimen responsible for one of the deaths....

Sharks, despite their bloodthirsty reputation, have only carried out eight fatal attacks on humans off the Florida coast in the same period.

But, after the terror of the past few days, the fear of alligators is at an all-time high in canals, lakes and the Ever-glades, the natural wetlands in the south of the state.

BEST. ARTICLE. EVER.

(Thanks for the MI, taz. I mucked it up.)

See, the difference between snakes and alligators is that alligators HAVE LEGS.

Heh. Serial killers have legs, too, pupps.

(actually, I didn't MI - that was someone else... But,

"Killer Alligators: More Inside"

would be a great name for this post.)

I hadn't been following this story. Or reading this thread until after I read Annamarie's friend's thread.

...so the description of the attack on the law student who was jogging...well, that's one of the most horrific images I've ever encountered. Awful, awful, awful.

My Dad is in Tampa Bay- said they just caught a "killer alligator" near our house. 8 1/2 feet. Geesh. Not sure if it actually harmed someone, or if he was being facetious.

When we lived in our old FL house, my Mom was good friends with our neighbor, a woman with 5 kids who was overly anxious about hurricanes, alligators, etc. One day, my mother, the eternal jokestar, bought a huge blow up alligator for our pool, blew it up, put it on their front lawn, and ran into their house- "Mary, Mary, there's a huge alligator on your front lawn! And it's chasing Chad!" (the youngest child). Mary runs out to Chad sitting on the blow-up alligator. Oh, Mother.
