As a heavy metal fan, I still feel obliged to loathe him. It was having to endure endless hours of synthpop like Culture Club and Duran Duran as a 12 and 13 year old that got me into heavy metal, then classic rock, punk, hip-hop and everything else to escape. So in a backasswards way, maybe I should thank him. Besides our gay dude is much cooler than George. Just sayin'.
I love him too, matteo. I remember seeing him for the first time on an afternoon talk show when I was in jr. high.(Merv Griffin, maybe?) and just being dumbstruck. Is that a girl? But he calls himself Boy George, so I guess it's a boy. He goes out like that? In public? And not just in public, ON TELEVISION?
Plus, he seemed to make all the adults uncomfortable and I LOVED him for that.
I was in 5th grade when Culture Club hit over here. One of my friends would only answer to "Boy George" for a time instead of his real name. When the rumors started that Boy George was gay, my friend would throw a fit if anyone mentioned it and would swear up and down that it wasn't true. : )
My mom had to explain to me why I couldn't grow up to be like Boy George when I was about six.
I still love him. I just read his autobiography not too long ago. Good read.
As for the drugs, well, I've known people who have lived with a lifelong addiction that seem to have hit a point where they can manage it, and function. However, once you throw unregulated street drugs into the mix, you're automatically looking at an early death. Too many variables, too many dangers.
I hope he can eventually beat this. Not sure, though. It seems like he's been fighting it for, well, almost as long as I've been alive. It's an awful thing that the lifestyle so many musicians and DJs lead is so tied into the drug cultre, to the point that you can't perform music or work as a DJ without being surrounded by drugs.
Right now, people voting BNP. It is really shocking, especially young people voting BNP. There's plenty of room for everyone here. And I love Eastern European men, so I say, tear down the borders, they can camp out in my yard.
That's absolutely brilliant. Oh my God I haven't laughed so much in weeks! Cheers, matteo. A lovely find.
I saw his (and Rosie O'Donnell's) broadway play "Taboo" the weekend it closed in NYC out of sheer curiosity. Because I was never a fan, I didn't really want the ticket, but I'll never forget the performance. Boy George was absolutely fierce in it, and pwned the stage. The production and story was pretty lame, but Boy George's presence made it fucking rawk.
