David (Y)ow!! Youtube of Jesus Lizard frontman gettin' beaned by a bottle during performance of "seasick".
I still love this band.

I never understood why people would pay to see a band they dislike enough to throw things at. It just doesn't make sense.

One time somebody threw a lighter at David Lee Roth during a show and he said, "That's OK, I know who did it and I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend after the show." That's a frontman for ya.

I'd take David Yow over David Lee Roth, but that's what makes the diversity of music and opinion such a wonderful thing.

safetyfork, I like 'em both, but you gotta give Diamond Dave style points for his response to his beaning.

fucking motherfucking awe-some. Yow is such a badass. We were just talking about him last night. A friend relayed the story of the show where the front of the stage was lined with Nazi skinheads giving their stiff-armed salute, protesting his homosexuality. Yow, wearing nothing but a long t-shirt, lifted it to his chest and gave them good long close look.
thanks for this.

Jon - my gf just interviewed DLR last week. I am jealous.

this is why I used to both love and hate going to shows in dallas

jonmc, I hear ya: this album was one of the first rock albums that I aspired to imitate, and it was well before I could play an instrument. They both have a style, that while different, definitely makes them compelling fronts to some great music. I'm just a wee bit more a Yow man is all I'm sayin'. No disrespect to DLR's place in rock.

hellbient, that's a great story.

One of the things that surprised me about the youtube video is that David wm. Sims (the bassplayer) leaves the stage. Everytime I saw that band he was an unshakable machine. I would've expected more of a stop and glare at the audience with uncanny stillness for the duration of the cleanup type of response.

Yow is one of my favorite performers--a one-man mosh pit.

I once saw him play in Toronto and he told everybody to stand up (the back of the room had chairs). One woman refused so he ran and sat on top of her and wouldn't get off her for the rest of the song. She struggled like a demon to get him off of her but he just held his ground and sang from her lap. It was pretty fucking hilarious. She stood the rest of the show.

The first time I saw them was probably 92 or 93. The opening band was The Violent Brothers and they put on a good show but the room was almost empty (Opera House in Toronto). They finished their set and I turned to hit the bar and a fucking SWARM of biker guys were leaping the railing and shit to hit the floor. I don't think I've ever been so frigthened in my life. I was almost trampled.

As for the throwing shit thing... I saw Danko Jones in Jan at Lee's Palace in Toronto (a club I fucking HATE) and this fucking dickwad whipped a bottle at Danko. It smashed on the mic stand and went right into my face (I was at the front taking pictures)--if I hadn't been wearing glasses I'd-a been blinded. Of course, the assholes at Lee's didn't do shit. I even sent them pictures of the dick hoping they'd ban him. Nope.
