Remembering MiHail. We are collecting donations, in cooperation with MetaFilter (posted here), to benefit an organ donation charity in memory of MiHail. (announcement of MiHail's death at Mefi & MeTa; related mecha post)→[More:]

If Canadians want to donate in CDN $ the paypal contact is kelly@itgenomics.com

Unless someone has a better idea, the money will benefit the Coalition on Donation via a memorial contribution in MiHail's name from Metachat and Metafilter, and a memorial letter will be sent to MiHail's family.

I don't have any money, but I signed up to be an organ donor the day I got my motorcycle license.

I wonder what percentage of organ donors are young, fresh, healthy, stupid motorcycle riders? [Eideteker being presumably all but the last of those adjectives.]

We have already had donations come in. Thanks to you all. I just wanted to add this note. In the interest of accountability I will be sharing all the paypal info with taz and dodgy. Other than that all info will stay confidential.

I heard the availability of organs decreased dramatically in California when it passed the helmet law.

Just a thought -- will MiHail's username be included in any either the donation or the letter? Because when I go, I'd rather y'all didn't reveal me as mudpuppie to my family. I've shared way too much here and would like to keep it here.

Maybe someone's already thought of this, but I just wanted to point it out.

Also, kudos for doing this.

This is such a no brainer. If you haven't signed up to be one, please do. Not limited to people expecting fiery deaths!

Speaking with transplant surgeons, the rise in helmet law enforcement has really put a dent in the number of organs available for transplantation every year.

Personally, I'm for an opt-out system (when you get a driver's license/whatever you bank a tissue sample to determine your HLA matching; probably cost prohibitive, though) rather than the current opt-in system (where next-of kin has veto powers over what you decided, even).
