You say emo, I say ecto ... let's call the whole thing off. [last.fm]→[More:]
So I got twigged to this new Last.FM meme, the Emo Test. I passed with a measly 2.6% emo rating! Whew, no whiny YouTube videos for me. So, all y'all MeChascrobblers, look at your profile and get your own emo rating. Dare you be honest and post it here?! Time will tell!

But! That was not enough for me. See, I realized long ago that I have a hankering for some ecto artists. Ecto being a fan-defined genre originally centered around the obscure Happy Rhodes, but more easily defined as Kate Bush and company (said company being mostly less musically adventurous than La Kate).

So, I thought I might have a higher score on this one, so I concocted the Ecto Test ... and I was right, 13.6%! (It would be more if it used more than the top 10 artists, or if almost half my list weren't impossibly obscure.)

13.6% emo, though all it really shows me is that if people are given free rein to define a genre, they will do it poorly. Come on, 69 tagged Radiohead as emo? I would have accepted a maximum of 10%, since Death Cab for Cutie is in my top 10.

Mostly this test proves I need something better to do.

I'm only 4.91% I'm helped by the fact that Hollertronix is in no way a group that could be labeled emo.

5.5% ecto. Imogen Heap is my only ecto artist.

Some emo stuff is actually very good, musically. Taking Back Sunday is beautifully layered vs grandad rock like Coldplay.

Frankly, I'm surprised it's even that high. If DJ Shadow fell out of the top ten, that number would go way down. Hmm. I could forcibly remove Shadow by listening to eleven Fela Kuti songs.

Also--I don't think it's so much people mistakenly identifying Miles Davis or Blackalicious as 'emo,' but rather people using 'emo' not to refer to a particular kind of music, but to mean something more like 'sad.'

1.6 % emo. I only got a score with 4/10 of my top artists (interpol, belle and sebastian, pixies, PJ harvey).
