10 May 2006

I gots a question for the ladies of MetaChat. [More:]

I'm going bra shopping soon, and am actually going to go get fitted so I know what my real size is. (36B is too big around, 34C slips off my shoulders, and 32D is too tight, so god knows what's going on.)

So, what's your favorite brand? What's comfortable and smooth and makes your boobies nice and perky?
I just went bra shopping! At Intimacy. Spent a fortune, but it was SO worth it. New favorite bra brand is Prima Donna. Expensive, but I looks good.

And PLEASE get fitted by a real professional, not at Vicki's Secret. They suck and so do their bras, especially for big busted ladies.

Speck, I think the people who do your fitting will recommend a brand or a few brands for you. Becuase they're all somewhat different, they find ones that fit your shape the best, etc.

I still haven't gone for my real fitting (and need to, but plan to wait until I drop the last 10 pounds), but that's just what I've heard about fittings. You get not just size but brand recommendations.

I went to Town Shop. It was quite fun, although kind of weird, because you can't really browse. After they fit you, you had to say stuff like "more lacy" and "less ugly". I got 2 by Chantelle. They are lovely.

I wish it was possible to get more bras for sizes over 38C that don't look like industrial contraptions from early socialism.

I know, matildaben- years of ugly bras can make a girl crazy. They brought me all sorts of pretty bras at Intimacy, including a plunge with no price tag. I'LL TAKE IT, I squealed. Oh, and how much is it? $117. Heh.

I've heard there is a shop in University Village that has pretty stuff in plus sizes. Also, elizard told me about a place in Vancouver. Canada is so much more civilized about having clothes in a more realistic range of sizes.

I was going to browse around some patent drawings and hack up a quick industrial, steam-powered bra, but then I found this and stopped.

Yeah, one thing that made me happy since I got to Toronto was actually finding bras in my size! Cute ones! In Florida I would have to dig through every bra in the store to find one. Now, if only I could afford to buy new bras...

Neiman Marcus will order larger sizes for you if you find something you like that they do not have in your size. I can't remember where else she shopped.

I googled this. I am useful.
or you just like looking at girls in their underwear.
posted by jonmc 10 May | 13:23
sadly at this point i consider looking at storm chasing pages or gardening sites better uses of my time than looking at girls in their underwear.
what about girls gardening in their underwear? I ask because I'm thinking of creating a themed pornsite once I'm unemployed. "Hoeing Peas in my BVD's" or maybe "Rotating Crops Without Their Tops."

It needs work.

Ugh. The annoyance that is the bra. NO underwires. I'm not putting a mini guillotine under my boobs. Yeah I wish they were smaller but that seems a bit drastic. Never been fitted, never spent more than about $30 for one. I usually find one I like then buy 3 and never, ever put them in the dryer to get the most life out of them.

I got "fitted" a couple of years ago; I won the lingerie fitting in a raffle. They identified 3 brands that worked well for me.

I indulge myself with lovely scanties from Aubade several times a year. They're expensive, high quality, and sensually satisfying.

Most recent purchase was from the Summer 2006 collection: Capri in white.

If you get fitted, ask them about Aubade lingerie; if the brand is for you, I guarantee you'll be pleased. :D

chewatadistance.. if the bra fits properly, any underwire is totally not noticable.

I so owe you an e-mail. Please be the patient with me, new job and travelling next week, but I haven't forgotten.

Yeah but, will the plants really get enough sunlight down there?

I was thinking tubers, drjimmy. There we go "Planting Tubers in Tubetops."

i think it would be neat if bra companies would come out with bras with two regular cups, and then a padded one in the middle for Halloween or when you just want to frighten the pigeons a little.

it can be kind of amusing but mostly in the way things bunch up

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. I'm definitely not going to V.S. (their bras fall apart instantly), but thought I'd try Nordstrom.

Keep you posted?

I so owe you an e-mail.
Yeah you do! I was wondering iffen you wuz still alive! No worries, my sweet.

boxer shorts .. even silk.. are rather boring.

however.. a "tighty whitey" design in dark red lace.. mmmm :) he'd score.

i dunno. i'm leaning towards the mormon underwear or a flowy bedshirt.
everything skimpy is just penis decoration.
maybe a nosegay.

Actually only one is.

I wish men wore lacy scanties.

Some do, but they're usually named Buttercup LaDoodlebug and dance in cages above nightclubs.

As for mens underwear, flannel boxers are the only dignified choice. As for ladies underwear, it's something they do for eachother, cause frankly men don't care. Our goal is to get the undies off of you.

I like the Elle MacPherson bras and even their cute ones have support. They only go up to a 38DD though.

I'll live. I prefer the rough pleasures of unsoftened cotton chafing my forbidden valley, thanks.

Fair enough, but may I steal that line? "forbidden valley" ... yes... I could use that.

Everything La Perla makes looks absolutly delish. I bought a set years ago when I was much much skinnier which was tres hot, but not quite the perfect fit. Straps were too damn long, always seemed to have that problem.

What makes you so sure we don't?

Even if you get fitted, don't the sizes vary with brands?

I bought some underwear for She Who Must Be Obeyed at Christmas, which she absolutely loved, but the bra was too big even though it was her size. I took it back, but they didn't have the next smaller size in the same colour. I have been trying since Christmas to find one in that colour and size, but they have nothing in that colour any more, it seems. I hate it when gifts that are initially received so well turn out bad.

Yep. One of the reasons you go to get fitted is that the fitter can recommend brands that will fit your particular shape, size, and placement of boobs.
posted by Specklet 10 May | 18:02
Women are complicated creatures, indeed.
posted by dg 10 May | 19:04
Can I say "placement of boobs"?
posted by matildaben 10 May | 19:25
dg, I'll continue to watch for men in fine fabrics, then.

i think you should, matildaben.

dabitch, the LaPerla stuff is gorgeous. I love the green lacy set. The second slide is lovely, too.. I've been buying some of those "St. Tropez" style panties. Ah hell.. the third slide is wonderul. woohoo! Fine scanties really are nearly my only truly selfish indulgence, thanks!

Specklet's exactly right. Good brassierage (I made that up) is important, especially for those of you with larger breasts.

posted by reflecked 10 May | 19:57
Augh, I hate bra shopping. I'm way down at the tiny end of the size spectrum and it's just as bad here with all the heavy padding and air pockets and no space across the front and augh. It's like they purposely design these things to accomodate an extra pair of socks.

As for ladies underwear, it's something they do for eachother, cause frankly men don't care.

Reminds me of an argument b/t my bro and SIL, which quickly degenerated into "you don't care about me because..."

My bro often bought nice lingerie for my SIL because that's what he always saw her wearing. However, she only wore that because that's what she thought HE(=guys) liked. She didn't like lingerie and preferred basic cotton underwear, but wore lingerie to keep her guy interested. Happy ending to this story, my brother is not really attracted to the lingerie look, but does like the white cotton panties look. My SIL now wears the white cotton panties she prefers and my bro finds it sexy. And so everyone was happy. (Except for the sister who happened to witness this argument and found out way more than she wanted to know about her bro's sexual turn-ons.)

I checked out the La Perla site but it scared me off right away because the only size options were I, II, III, and IV. To me, that says "40D and over please go away you HURF DURF FATTIES".

As far as whether men like pretty underwear on women as well as off, I've got a few data points that indicate that it's plausible.

Casarkos, why do tiny girls need a bra at all? Can't you just wear a camisole? (I'm genuinely curious.)
posted by matildaben 11 May | 12:44
csarkos, if the bras fit like that, then they don't fit.

luneray, your point is spot-on. No one should wear lacy lingerie for anyone but themself, unless they're into costumes.

I have this theory about why some of the high-end lingerie designer don't do bras for ample breasts: the expense. This stuff is really expensive, and nice big breasts take lots more fabric. There ARE lingerie houses that don't limit to the smaller sizes, and :D

large or small, if you get yourself "fitted", you'll get the names of brands that would work for you.

I have small tits, matildaben. 32B. I wear a bra so that my nips don't show (yes i could put a piece of tape over them, but then there's the adhesive to clean off), to keep any bouncing to a minimum (yes smalls do bounce), and because I like lacy stuff on my skin.
