Why does Bactine smell so good? [More:]
If someone made Bactine-scented candles, I'd buy a hundred of them and keep one burning all the time.
Because you associate it with positive nuturing events from your childhood?

NURTURING!

that can't be the whole reason because I like the smell, too, and I grew up in a Betadine household.

Oh, totally the childhood. I associate the sweet aroma of Bactine with the few instances in which my mother was actually nice to me.

There's an idea... do a Frank Booth and huff Bactine. "MOMMY!"

What did you hurt, monkey?
posted by mudpuppie 09 May | 16:10
He didn't hurt anything, he uses it as aftershave on his noggin. Right, cmonkey?

Ah.

Okay then, back to the garden.

I would guess the camphor, without any googling.

Aw. I don't know if you're kidding or not, but aw anyway.

Aftershave? No, I like the way the open cuts feel.

But yesterdayI jabbed my self with a rusty safety pin (it was in the toilet tank...it's a long story) and figured I'd dump a bunch of Bactine on my fingers just to make sure nothing unpleasant happens.

I don't really associate it with childhood; I was more of a "left to my own devices" kid.. Anywhoo, I'm thinking about sipping some to see if it tastes as nice as it smells. I'll be back with a trip report tonight.

Heh. That would be funny if it weren't so sad.

I feel this way about ginger ale. Ginger ale is when mommy's really worried about me and how I feel and is very concerned with my immediate needs, some of which are satisfied by the ginger ale which is followed by some more to be at hand just in case.

This thread is full of wistfulness...

THAT I CAN'T PARTICIPATE IN. a) I have no idea what bactine smells like; 2) I have no idea what my mom used, and no memories associated with minor cuts; iii) I use hydrogen peroxide now, which doesn't smell like much of anything. What a bag of disappointment.

I do remember that being sickish was kind of okay, though, because I got to lay on the couch all day snuggled in a blanket while reading and eating jello and saltines. PS: Don't read The Exorcist while in this condition. Not good.

*squeezes Bactine extra hard and accidentally gets it all over pup*

Don't sip Bactine, man. It'll make your mouth and tongue vaguely but unpleasantly numb. [Myself, I always associate it with new piercings...]

Hey, this was a brand new shirt!

But I smell so nice and sterile now...
posted by mudpuppie 09 May | 19:28
Yeah taz, I feel your pain. I remember seeing a bactine joke in a Bloom County comic, but I've never been bactined before.

Heh - under Ingredients: No.

But they do disclose what the ingredients are. I'm not sure whether you're/cmonkey's digging the "fragrances" or the benzalkonium chloride (which appears to be an [albeit rather heavy] aromatic [the aromatic moniker is not necessarily from being "good" smelling, just that they're smelly] hydrocarbon).

You don't mind the smell of gasoline, do you?

Personally, I really dig the (faint) smell of bleach myself.

ubersturm - must be the lidocaine in bactine.
