Hey Guys! Look what I found!
[More:]
I'm sitting in a hotel room in San Antonio, writing my final final paper of my academic career (eep), and of course instead of writing, I'm looking up famous usernames on UrbanDictionary.

damn...
mathowie tingled all over at the touch of quonsar's cat o' nine tails. - PRICELESS!

PS, sorry for the unintentional mysogeny in my post. By "guys", I do not mean "humans with penises", but rather "the general group of people towards which I'm talking/typing."

Can't guys just be everyone by now? I've been arguing that 'guys' is genderneutral for years.

"guys" can be gender-neutral but "guy" can't, while "babe" can be neutral ("I got you babe") but "babes" can't. English are hard.

Yay Miko. I've been arguing the same thing, too...but I think the disclamer is funny! (and now I've just derailed my own thread).

Heh. Good points, timefactor.

Also, "Dude". These days, when used in direct address it has become fairly gender inclusive ("Dude, what were you thinking!"), but in reference it's always masculine ("I know this dude who blah, blah").

I have trouble figuring out a casual way to address a small group of women. I suppose guys works just fine, but it just seems odd to me. Girls sounds condescending. Ladies is too formal or sarcastic. Gals appears to be the female version of guys, but it is an archaic term.

Woe is me.

I propose "Nuns".

Hey - What you nuns up to today?

mullac, there's always the timeless and gentle "y'all". Just like deepfried Snickers, it's not only for them sothrons any more.

The urban dictionary is very funny. It's just out of date enough.. y'all know what I mean?

Odd, that definition, though. quonsar can be many things, but "fuckwit" isn't something I'd have ever associated with him. :)

I've been using y'all more and more. I'm not southern and have not used it much before, but I like it and find that it comes out very naturally.

Though I have to be careful not to overuse it and work up some artificial twang to go with it.

mullacc - recently, I used the phrase "all y'all". I need to watch what I say!

Actually, this has made quite a comeback. It's my preferred 'group of women' address, and I know some other gals here feel the same.

What's wrong with "bitches"?

*ducks*

Probably all female animal names like "cows" and "hens" should be avoided. Except maybe "ewes".

"Hey ewes!"
"Yeah, I'm talkin' to ewes."
