Thanks for the wishlist items! Two fabulous bunnies (I know who one is, the other, despite knowing who some of her ancestors are, is a mystery to me) sent me items from my wishlist. Stanley Bros and Roscoe Holcomb YSIs inside.

Thank you, thank you. I won't name names since that was not authorized, but you both rock. As does the music.
The SB tunes are off the Complete Mercury recordings, which are just fabulous. I love the religious songs even though I'm not a believer. And check out the way they swing through Blue Moon of Kentucky. Take that Bill Monroe!:

The Holcomb is a different field of marijuana, but so so good. The unaccompanied version of Moonshiner makes it as tragic a song as one could want. It so far exceeds the pathos of the Dylan or Uncle Tupelo versions as to put it in a different league altogether. Free Bird has Mike Seeger on fiddle and John Cohen who took the iconic pictures of Holcomb from the 60s, on guitar. And, of course, just him and his banjo on Omie Wise. The liner notes talk about a 1966 tour through Europe with Roscoe, The Stanley Bros, the Cyp Landrenau Cajun Band and The New Lost City Ramblers. I can't believe I missed it/wasn't even born yet. Just 8 years later I was living in Germany, busily attending kindergarten, yearning for the sounds of my Appalachian home, but alas, the tour was over.
