Major (8.1) earthquake has hit the Tonga Islands. A Tsunami warning has been issued for Fiji and New Zealand. The quake hit a couple of hours ago, and a tsunami, should it occur, could hit Fiji as soon as... well, already, and New Zealand in another hour. (Here's the current Greenwich Mean Time for reference, and here's the Google news update page)

It looks like the warnings for NZ have been stood down. Yay!

Now I just have to find my two friends in Fiji.

Yeah... I have been, too, gaspode. I woke up from a nap and saw an alert in my email (I get earthquake alerts from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre), and was like, whooooahhh, 8.1? And immediately thought "Tsunami". When I first checked google news, there were only a couple of reports, and now they are flowing... but no real updates... aarrgh.

On preview, good news about NZ!

CNN says the warning's been totally cancelled now. Yay!

heh:
Niue registered a 0.21m wave at 4.03am and Pago Pago registered a 0.15m wave at 4.36am, according to data on the Tsunami Warning Centre website.

That's a pretty half-hearted tsunami.
