Moresukine (Moleskine)--this guy gets requests on life in Tokyo and stuff, and draws the results as little comics
That is fan-fucking-tastic.

This is pretty cool, the artist is very good. Thanks for the link! Do you ever read Moleskinerie? I wonder if they know about Moresukine.

I really like them too. : >

i've been hunting around for stuff on tokyo, and found that thru Jean Snow's blog -- he's a tokyo editor for gizmodo and gridskipper and mocoloco and japan times and frommer's and superfuture and ... tons of cool stuff and great tokyo info.

Lemme ask you guys--should i bring my laptop? my camera?

oh, halo--thru i just found an exhibit of moleskines from artists and stuff on in tokyo--thanks!

Has anyone found a long shot of that guy's moleskin on Moresukine? I need proof that those drawings are actually in an actual moleskine.

Anyway, I hate bringing cameras and crap when I travel. Not that I travel much. But I don't even own a camera - I find that it distracts me from actually enjoying what I'm seeing. I'd definitely bring a laptop though, just so I could access tourist info from the hotel room.

that's been my thinking too, mullacc--i stopped bringing one ages ago because i realized i was looking for good pictures instead of looking at stuff, and i would have to remember to pick it up in restaurants and stuff and everything--i don't regret it at all, but Tokyo's so weird and chock full of stuff, i'm wondering if i should or not.

Also, if i bring my laptop i can dump the pics into it each night from the camera (which i never could do in the past).

(how many times can i use "stuff" in one sentence?) : >

Hey amberglow! If you want to access tourist info, you can find Internet cafes everywhere here. I really don't think you need to bring a laptop unless you have to do business on it. And if you think you could use a camera once you get here, well, this IS Japan after all...

i know, miso--i keep bouncing back and forth about it...we'll see what i end up doing. How expensive are those Elphs there? or other slim cameras?

(Someone will have to bring a camera to the meetup too)

Woo cool! Glad to help, amberglow!

By Elphs do you mean the ones by Canon? They're called IXY here, I think, and I happen to have one. I got mine about a year and a half ago for about 28,000 yen. Of course I'll bring it to the meetup! But this particular model is old now and it looks like the going prices for the newer models (unused) are around 30,000. And if you just want a camera that'll last you through this trip, you could find one for a lot less. There are also lots of used electronic shops along the side streets of Akihabara... you ARE planning to go to Akihabara, right? It's only a few stops down the Yamanote Line from Ueno, and even if you don't buy anything, you've gotta wander around, maybe stop by one of the "maid cafes" just so you can say you've been there...

Wow, this is truly an excellent find. Thanks, amberglow.

i'm totally going to wander thru akihabara but i wasn't planning on buying a camera or anything. 30k yen = 260 bucks (which actually is a great price for them) this is the one i meant
posted by amberglow 29 April | 21:05
Site's in Japanese, but this, right? IXY digital L3 The price shown there is the bottom end, and not necessarily in Akihabara, so the range is somewhere between 24,460 to 36,467 according to kakaku dot com.
Oh, and I also enjoyed the comics you linked to. Sorry I didn't say so first.
posted by misozaki 29 April | 21:40
that's it--that's a wonderful price (but i really don't need one, sadly--it's just cool)

now, something like this would be really really good to have--reads and writes and can convert vhs/dvd/hdd---Pioneer DVR RT50H
posted by amberglow 30 April | 20:43
but 50,000 yen=440 bucks (maybe that's not bad?)
